Guy came at me with a knife the other day...

Like the title says, some guy who's hated me for approximately forever came at me with a knife the other day.

I haven't said anything about it because well, it was pretty traumatic. (I'm a wuss.)

Ok first, background:

Old friend (female) who I haven't seen in years runs up and hugs me. This guy I met once (who hates me for no reason I can discern) then proceeds to pull his knife on me. And then comes the obligatory threat: "Get out of my f%$king face or I'll slit your throat!"

Ok at this point I'm both scared, and REALLY angry. I was bullied a lot when I was younger, so now that I've realized I can give someone a concussion with one punch (big guy, knows how to fight.) I have been settling scores left right and crooked (Yeah, I know that's a not a good thing, but I've only punched one guy out of the whole deal, and yes for those who will say, "You need help" getting it for the past 4yrs, like you needed to know.)

As angry as I was, and as scrawny and meth eaten as he was I realized the knife tilted the field in his favor, especially considering he is the wrong sort of people. (Drugged out ICP worshipper or some such shaZam!.)  And he probably knows how to use that knife.

It took me a second, but I realized: A. I could disarm him before he could do mortal damage, simply by virtue of strength and pain tolerance. (Ever hit the middle of your hand with a hatchet? Yeah I did at 7yrs old, didn't cry, see the part about being bullied A LOT.) B: Pride is not worth a life if I miscalculate this.

That was the hard one. Being that I spent my entire life until recently being pushed around now that I ALLOWED myself to push back I valued my pride IMMENSELY. So I had a split second to ask myself how much my pride was worth.

Pride < Life

And by the time I was done with my little moral dillemma I had an @$$hole with a knife closing on me. Great.

First instinct: Swing. I've hit people bigger than this and sent them to the hospital with one punch. If he's dead/unconscious he can't kill me.

I didn't go with that one.

What I did: Stepped back, and said, "Think carefully, regardless if your attack is successful or not if you proceed you go to jail for attempted murder FOR LIFE." His G/F pulled him away at this point, I hope he realized that this is REAL, not some feudal Japan anime.

I think given the problems I've grown up with and am not willing to share I think I did pretty good.

But I don't think anyone blames me for going and getting some mace, and clutching it rather closely the past couple days.

P.S. before you respond and insult me, think about this: If your friend, or even acquaintance told you this would you insult/nitpick/get on a high horse? I thought not, please do me the same courtesy.
Rich, RIP.

I think you did the right thing.  Kudo's on choosing life over pride that is a very very hard and mature thing to do.

I'd have f%$king killed him...I'd have had to have my girl there to keep him alive (violence + the fiance = no fly zone).

(maybe not killed him...I'd have to be pretty certain of his intent to kill me to go that far...but he'd need professional help to recouperate)

I'm not one of those guys who sits around deliberating life's big decisions when they come at me with a knife...

Let's not get my thread Tf'd plz.

Anyways, yeah Mak that was the first thought going through my head as I pointed out.

But I think the consequences were a little steep.

No I haven't called the cops. I plan to if he comes within 10 feet of me though. (I know the whole escalation and yada yada... I am aware of the consequences of my actions, the reason i didn't fight.)

After Graduation I was out with a Buddy and we Had a Flat.He went into the Station to see if they had a Plug Kit.I knew the Guy Hung Around that Particular Station. While I was Kneeled Down Inspecting the Tire I saw A shadow coming up behind me.Luckily I stood up in time or my throat would have been Cut.When I did Stand up and He saw that I had Slimed Down a Bit and Had Arms bigger than his Puny little Neck he took off Running like a little Buddha Loves You.His Buddies Came out and Asked me If I had seen Him.I scratched my Head and Said Yeah he went that Way.You might be able to follow him by the Trail of Piss.

CC, you did the right thing.  I used to teach karate for a number of years.  One afternoon, one of my upper belt students came into class with a swagger.  Apparently he had been walking home from work when a guy stepped out of an alley, pulled a knife, and demanded the student's wallet.  My student disarmed the guy, threw him on the ground, and kicked his head a few times before running away.

After telling this story, he looked at me hoping that I would praise his technique, attention to skills, etc.  Instead, I chewed him out in front of the entire dojo, telling him he was an IDIOT to risk injury / life for the contents of his wallet.  When we reviewed the situation later, there were numerous opportunities this kid had to walk away.  Instead, he foolishly stayed, fought, and this time--got lucky.

Before anyone accuses me of being an "armchair quarterback," let me assure you that I have had a knife pulled on me too.  I've also had a gun pulled on me on three separate situations.  Since studying martial arts, I've become a lot smarter about the company I keep. ;)

Any fight that you can walk away from having used your words is a very successful fight indeed.  You are here to tell us about it, you are healthy--you won that fight.

guns/knives different.  Someone comes at me with a gun common sense tends to rank.

The high school and jr high I went to when younger had a lot of wannabe thugs...faced knives plenty of times.  After a while that pride vs life argument gets old after facing the same situation week after week with no interference from staff or authoraties ("telling" tended to make the situations worse).  Instead of trying to run and "tell", I started using chairs and shaZam! to beat the hell out of them...and I started a collection of nifty knives.

No armchair warrior...armed people taking the offensive against unarmed people just piss me off.  Anna could probably take me if he comes at me unarmed...but I can damned creative with as little as a scroll-mouse or a small trophy or the contents of my wallet...
