I'm looking for a newer motor for a '95.  It doens't matter what year it is.  Just newer.  It can be 01-06 or 89-00.  Just a motor.  pm me if you have one. jerk outbid me on ebay in the last 30 secs on the last one.  It was 04 engine with 3,7xx miles on it. I want to choke that guy.
Ride it like you stole it.  But, then fix it right.

well, the cam chain guide on the back side where the tensioner pushes gave out.  It broke in two where the tensioner pushes so the chain was REALLY loose.  I thought about just getting a used engine instead of rebuilding this one.  But, I think I might just go ahead and rebuild it.  I think it will need a new cam chain and the back guide.  After that it shold work just fine.  It also has 20,xxx miles on it.  I pulled the head off and looked at the pistons and the cylinders and everything looks just fine.  I think I'm just going to replace the needed parts and it will be good enough for my GF to learn to ride on for now.  Besides, as soons as she gets comfortable she plans on buying a zzr-600.  She likes my zzr 1200 its just too big.

Yeah, I got the tensioner.  Thanks again!

Yea man, just split the cases and replace the broken guide.  There is a spec for maximum cam chain stretch in the manual; as long as you are under that measurement you're golden.  You already have a new tensioner right?

Afzzr12

yeah, I already have the tensioner.  I pulled the head today and all the bolts to split the cases.  I just can't seem to get the cases apart.  I plan on ordering the haynes or clymer manual tomorrow so I can have a basic guide to do this by.  I'm a decent wrench I just haven't gone this far into a motorcycle engine before.  It is new to me to have a tranny hooked up to the crank and all in the same case.  I'm more used to 350 chevy's and what not.  I'm just going to rebuild it.  Thanks for picking on me enough to get me to do it.

did you forget the bolts under the oilpan, and the 2 allen type hidden in the oil filter cavity? dont forget the one under the starter. and for GODS SAKE, get an inchpound torque wrench. some of those small ones around the tranny snap supper easy.
Accelerate like your being chased, Corner like you mean it, Brake as if you life depends on it.

Man that motor went for some real money.  Maybe I should F my project bike and just part it out before I've spent money on it.  Then use the money to upgrade my current ride.  I don't know why I want 2 GS's anyway...

ducati_nolan

You need to split the cases to replace the cam chain guide? I thought you could do it with just taking the top end and the oil pan off. I've never done it but it seems like it'd be easier that way. at 20k there should be no reason to do any more rebuilding than just replacing the broken stuff.
