Here are some cheap pods that should fit.

This is the reason I am replacing them:  My current ones are way too big and they always get in the way.  The one's I found on ebay are allegedly for a Yamaha xs650 and have a 60mm mouth opening.  The size of the intake flange on the GS is technically 62mm, but I think I'll be able to wrangle them on there. 




Here is the link to the new ones.  They are K&N knockoffs but I don't really care, I have used knockoff air filters before and they are virtually indistinguishable from k&n except for the color of the filter.  They are probably made in the same factory in China. 



Once again I'll be the guinea pig for this little adventure.  Obviously there is far less surface area between a pair of these and the RU-2970("lunchbox") but I'm sure they'll be fine. 

I think the cone filters are going to look hot.

I just bit for $20.40 shipped, proly the cheapest air filter replacement option out there.  I could have gotten the lunchbox for around $30 and change but I figured what the heck?  I could either go with the tried and tested model or venture out onto the unbeaten path, out $20, no big deal.  Plus, I like being the guinea pig.

What I have found with air filters is that up to a cretain point having a less restrictive filter won't help you at all or require you to use larger jets or whatever because the amount of restriction is roughly the same as using velocity stacks or no filter at all.  And while these filters are smaller than the lunchbox I'm fairly certain that they will provide more than enough airflow, and that's the important part.

i have 140s in there but am running a bit rich
pod filters, costum r6 quill exhaust(no baffles)40/140 jets, heavy duty springs, sv650 rear shock, gsxr srad tail, bandit 600 4.5 inch rim with 150 tyre, gsx twin disc front end "1995 pocket rocket"  ridden by a kiwi in scotland

The problem with those filters is that the material is crappy and inconsistant.  You'll have to be sure to clean and oil them very frequently or you'll suffer at the hands of tiny debris.  I ran some on my old GS750 for a while before saying to hell with it and running open carbs.

But sitting away from direct weather, and maybe put a doubled over pop sock on it the good stuff, ask your wife for one of her best ones ...  :thumb: and run into the garage and come back 2 hours later smelling like gasoline and she'll understand ... it might last like I dunno a whole week ... yea ...
BTW these are emgo sheite and if you ever have gas over flow, it will most likely eat the glue for the end cap off and yea ... a week + ...
On the flip side ... they clamp on great and their rubber part is do nice and thick ... unlike the K&N.
DOM - good to see ya again, and nice to know you're continuing to be a cheap ass ...  :laugh: ... thought you like were too good for us and so you left.

lol, i could well imagine how bad it would run if it was like that, that was ages ago when i was first putting them in.
mine are greek made and they seem fine, its been hard trying to get it perfect, i lost about 10mph up top but it pulls from about 3.5k smoothly right through, so it has been a play off. get more in mids but lose out up top :D good luck with your rejetting

why not just get the K&N pods that are actually the correct size for the GS... or the lunchbox

this is the only pic I have, but I'm sure everyone else will assure you they fit like a charm.

Speaking of oiling and taking care of Filters,

I just put a lunchbox on this weekend?  Should I have 'oiled' it before I put it on?  I saw something in the instructions about it but did not see any oil in the box?

Yes, they need to be oiled before use.

I think K&N makes more by selling their filter charger kits than they do on the filters. If you don't oil them they're almost worthless, letting a bunch of crud through the engine. Most motorcycle shops sell cheap air filter oil made for foam filters, but it seems like the same stuff that K&N sells. You can use mineral spirits or simple green to clean them. In a pinch, motor oil would be better than nothing.

Be carefull not to over oil them, they can be kind of restrictive when soaked in oil. It seems to work best when you spray with oil and let it sit for a while, then put a couple of paper towels inside the filter for a while and dab the outside with a paper towel to remove the excess.

K&N filters come pretty oiled up. The gauze will be white without the red tint of the oil ???
I confuse people extra by using oil that is green ... so it looks dirty all the time ...  :thumb:

Your K&N should have come in a plastic bag that read (in large lettering) "Factory Pre-Oiled" or something to that effect.  I've yet to see a K&N that didn't come oiled from the factory.

Here's a test: 


  • Touch the filter
  • Look at your finger

If its oily, its oiled.

Ok, I'm lazy! I'll say it 1st. What's the part number for the k and n pods, small ones that fit. I know the box is 2970. Anyone? Even better link it to usdesiel?!?! I said I was lazy... :)

my pods came white with a little packet of oil to put on myself. it was fun. K&N filters should be a deep red in color. that is the oil. A white K&N filter has not been oiled.

Yep, those are the ones I bought.  They fit fine.  Yeah they are cheap EMGO filters, Srinath, but whatever, at least they don't get bumped by my GSXR shock like the last ones did. 

Now all I have to do is reset the floats and I'll be good to go.  It seems they got bumped around a bit after I lowsided going around a corner in the rain, at night, with cool tires.   :cheers:
