bull honkey :)  i have an 05 and have not yet seen any oil just come up messing ... do to heat+aircooled ....... and i ride alot ... a whole lot .... but i change my oil every 2k ......... (tends to be 1once every 2 months some times less)

RobTheTyrant

^ agreed... I don't have squat for oil loss.  And if you check it once a month, you'd be fine if you did.  I drop a good thousand miles on my bike in a month, at least.

but sorry to hear about the bike man... drop a tree on it and collect the insurance, but I didn't tell you that!

Yea man, sorry to hear about your stolen bike.  Some people just have no morals  :thumb:

i will tell you right now, the gs and all engines burn some oil. the gs will burn oil more than you think, now that also depins on how many miles you ride it and how hard for that oil burn

for me, 90+miles a day at 85-95mph i will burn about a 1/2 Q a week in my case

you should always, always check the oil and tire pressure in the morning befor the first ride, every day. that is the one thing that you should aways do.

low tire pressure will cause poor and possable dangerous handling.

You can't make a blanket statement like that.  Any engine will wear excessively and burn oil if you abuse it.  After reading your posts, I have no doubt that your GS probably does burn oil.  Mine hasn't used a drop.  I am obsessive and check the oil extremely regularly.  I haven't added a drop of oil in the last 6 months and 2,000 miles.  The oil level hasn't budged on the dipstick a freakin mm.

well, thats what i do for a living, rebuild air-cooled engines, and when i went to school we were schooled
that all engines burn oil, now don't mis understand me, its not like the engine goes though 1 qt a week or somthing, the cly wall are coated in oil to prevent wear as as the cyl goes up and down it (although it had a oil wiper ring) the oil ends up in the chamber and then is burned.

but yea your right, big diffrence between me and you, i race my gs. and i also have a 14t cs sprocket  and drive it every day (or did). so after 20k+ i dont expect it to just to not burn some oil, hell alph bike you could see the smoke when he let off the throtte, he had more miles than me at the time.

these are not car engines so dont expect them to last 200k, the life i expect to get out of mine the way i ride is qabout 50k, then mabe head work.

this next valve check i do i will be tearing it down to inspect all the parts to see whats doing what.

bury the bike in your back yard and claim it was stolen.  After insurance pays it off, go get another bike and avoid cars...and always check your oil.  After a little big, go dig up the GS and part it out.

FearedGS500

race it ride it .. it dont matter .. i abuse the hell out of my bike but i take care of it at the same time ! i ride my bike like i'm racing it damn near everywhere i go .. i have almost 14k on it and i'm just now going to have to do a valve adjustment on it . yea it might burn out at some point .. maybe when its older ... ask css and stray ... i dont kitty cat foot around . i get on it and get with it i dont mess around thats just how i am and i like it that way .. i really dont think thats 14 you put up front is going to help in buring fuel .. all you did is change the gear setup .. if this was true then any thing you put a new setup in would do it ........ dont put a blanket on it like was stated earlyer .. you can say .. "most air cooled bike  burn oil "

Budrick320

Yeah believe that guy. The only time I went riding with him and a couple other guys, I wasn't used to riding that fast.

This whole oil situation seems wack.  I rode the crap out of my gs and did wheelies alot, not popping them up but riding them.  I never lost any oil.  When I bought my bike it was abused, the forks were shot and the tire was flat from the guy wheelying it before me.  Never had any oil problem.  Engine is the best running engine I have had.

pantablo

I had my 2001 for 16 months. I did 9,000 hard miles on it and I got it when it only had 425 miles on the clock. In 16 months I changed the oilmaybe 4-5 times. Never lost any oil.

Welcome!

Sometimes my bike uses oil, sometimes it doesn't.  But, I always check it weekly.

Everyone's been tellin me to junk the bike, BUT I CANT MY SELFISH IMPULSE GOT ME IN THIS f%$kIN LOAN SO IM f%$kED AND I HAVE TO FIX IT.
Your selfish impulse is going to learn you to appreciate this bike after you finish rebuilding the motor.  Enjoy the experience, you're learning a valuable lesson.  Welcome to the nut farm.

Some do, some don't, all I know is that my GS never really burned oil. I rode 1,000+ miles a month and changed the oil regularly though too. On top of that, I'm in the middle of the freaking New Mexico desert, so burning oil because of air cooled engine doesn't always jive. I've rode miles and miles in 105 degree F desert wasteland on an '89 and no oil burn off. Good oil maybe??  :dunno_white:
