Powdercoat, while functional, just doesn't have the deep gloss and shine like paint.  Since you mentioned "lots of clearcoat", I have a feeling that powdercoat just wouldn't give you the look that you are after.

Just go find a reputable local paint shop or auto body shop.  Its not really a big deal, anyone can prep and paint a gas tank.  Your only concern is making sure it is a reputable shop.

This is off-topic, but how did you end up with the new 05 tank if yours is the same design (though different paint/graphics) and in good shape?

No interest in painting it yourself?

The money you will pay someone to do this simple job, could buy you all the gear you need to spray this yourself.

I know not everyone is inclined to tackle a paint job, but It is easy enough.

Paint and clearcoat can be had for less than $70  and that is way more than you will need for a gas tank. Some paint shop might even sell you quarts of leftover paint for dirt cheap.

Then you just need a paint gun and air compressor. Paint guns range from $14 to $400.   My home projects are sprayed with a $14 walmart spray gun.  It works better than my brothers $150 one. (maybe cause I clean mine better)

all other materials will cost roughly $50 ie....sandpaper, bondo, tact cloth, thinner....ect...
My brother and I painted a Mazda RX7 in our back yard . It came out great. Problems like runs and overspray are always had even by the pros. you will learn to deal with them as they arise.

Oh well, just my two pennies.  I just think doing it yourself is way more satisfying and a better investment for your money.

Powdercoat doesn't have that deep gloss look, yes, paint that looks miles deep ...
Its actually due to several layers of clear ... which powdercoat cannot have, 1 layer of clear is all it can manage.
But ... your color is silver ... never going to look deep, dark colors are what look deep ... light colors ... never and silver is the worst of the lot.
Powdercoat is much more flexible than paint. they will have color tile samples at the place, take on of those and literally bend it in 1/2, and bent it back straight. No cracks on the inside or outside. 2-3 times and it will crack, just before the thing breaks.
I am powdering somehting silver as we speak. I'll let you know how it works. I also have done silver under candy blue. Eyepopping, especially in the sunlight.

Deep silver...mail to me...paint will be completed using a silver and lot of pearl/metal flake. Trick to a good silver is using a good paint...clear on a tank is essential because of potential gas spills, dropped keys, knees rubbing, tank bags, etc. I'll get you a quote  :laugh:

My first project was a soapbox derby car and I only had to respray it once. My brother and I painted a Mazda RX7 in our back yard when we were in highschool. It came out great. Problems like runs and overspray are always had even by the pros. you will learn to deal with them as they arise.

+1   I've got a  $ 50.00 sprayer and a old compressor that could not of been more than $ 100.00 and did pretty well on my last project when I changed the white to Met. Silver, and the light blue to a Met. Charcoal Grey.


Being naked was great, but now that I'm older I thought I should cover up!!!!

You know I did a GS500 valve cover almost exactly as you described, translucent blue over chrome. Pictures don't even come close to doing it justice.
 
As far as powdercoating not having the deep shine of paint you guys should have seen a small project I did for a friend a few months ago. Gloss black with a super gloss clear coat. It still looks wet to the touch. But high gloss powder is prone to micro scratches so it may not hold up for the long haul in an abrasive environment.

I was being serious...if u want I can get you a quote on the side plastics, front fender, etc. No need to remove decals or anything just have to let me know what you want done...straight shoots are usually cheaper. If you want simple graphics done, they're cheap..when things get complicated thats when they get expensive. I prefer Alsa paints, they are a base coat clear coat, tons of metallic, better quality than House of Kolor and produce amazing finished paint quality. Alsa base colors are $60 a quart, or you can go with a cheaper paint. Plastics really arent a big deal to paint. I did mine with no troubles. No flex issues or color mismatching. Looked good to me...My bike was done in silver with a blue candy and the silver was amazing even without the candy and clear. The shade of silver you'd want would have to be picked..I can send you samples. Let me know...that goes for everyone...we're ready to set up the paint shop for the winter. Portfolio pictures of samples are available.

OK chrome - very very different from silver - evidently silver has bits of mylar in it, chrome has aluminum. Its supposed to slowly turn black and shitty. You think the blue on top will save it from doing that ... how long has it been and how does it look ???

And if you need graffix lemme know. I use hi pro vinyls and can get you a set cheaper than the dealer in 'any colour you like' (useless pink floyd reference) Clear coat over 10 year hi pro vinyl and it'll last longer than the bike will (so long as you keep the rubber side down)
