Bike goes in for its appointment to get looked over this Saturday at 11am.

My mileage is sitting right around 15,800 something right now. I only get in about 120 or 130 miles a week now, because all I have time for is commuting. Haven't been on any rides in a while, unfortunately.

any word?

The first "quick" estimate gave ~$1700 in parts and labor. That didn't include the bars, frame, or case guards though. The adjuster looks at it tomorrow and I'll hear back about everything hopefully by middle of next week.

news?

The insurance adjuster had already been to the shop BEFORE I took the bike in because he didn't bother reading the note on his assignment that said "Bike will not be availible until Saturday, October 23, 2006. So I called them and complained and if no one goes to look at it by Friday, as I was told would happen, I get to call and shout and scream.

That's about it. I have to ride the bus to and from campus, which ends up taking anywhere from 15 to 40 minutes longer than it would be when I take my bike. And that doesn't even count the time I spend walking from the bus stop to my classes. Motorcycle parking is right outside essentially every one of my classes.

I got a beat up '98 Civic that I drive around, but I can't take it to campus and park it there like I do my bike simply because the bike has better parking areas and is far cheaper to get a permit for. $66 a year for prime motorcycle parking or $300/year for commuter parking (big lot, then take a bus to campus).

Alright ladies and gentlemen, my bike was declared as a total loss, which means that it will be totaled out. This also means that as soon as I have another bike lined up the little GS will be going strictly to track duty and y'all will see some cosmetic bling up for sale in the near future.

I'm going to call the adjuster now and see what he says about payment and buyback and whatnot.

Unfortunately, I don't think I'm ready to handle a 125HP liter bike (Z1000), nor do I think I want to deal with the Ducati maintenance at this stage in my life. I can't afford insurance on a 600cc supersport, nor do I like their fairings. However, I am talking with a guy about 30 minutes north of Austin about his DRZ400SM which is for sale.

VFR's are kick-ass.

Bring your GS up here so I can build you an exhaust for it and I'll put you on my TL...the 125hp jump isn't as tremendous as you think it is.

And Ducati is anything but over-rated.  I used to think so but the bikes are fine, fine machinery.  I also used to be leary about the valve checks...until I learned that it takes fewer tools than changing the oil on my TL and only 45 minutes.

rangerbrown

don't get me wrong, i i just personally don't see the need to spend the money on that brand when there are far cheaper and well more use-able (as in cost to operate).

if i was getting one it would be the monster

guy at work is leting me ride is vfr tomarrow, so that should be interesting. as i want a new bike one that is more suited for more touring. the gs is mostly my Buddha Loves You now.

hell last night got home, got off and droped it. didnt pick it up till this mornning. its like a dirt bike now lol

Oh my God, I actually agree with Mak on something!  The valves on my GS have to be adjusted 33% more often than the valves on my Ducati as per manufacturer maintenance schedules.

The "All Ducati's require too much maintenance" crap is just that; crap.  I liken it to the "All Harley's leak oil" BS.  Both of these statements may have had merrit at one point a few decades ago, but now they have become hear-say.

What I will say about Ducati maintenance is that it is extremely expensive.  If you can't perform valve checks and timing belt changes by yourself, its going to get pricey.  My Ducati is coming upon the 12k service.  It'll take me the better part of an afternoon and will cost around $60 for belts.  The dealer would charge around $1,000 for the same service.  :o

Right now I'm in the process of haggling a price for my bike. He said that the value for my bike was around $2500, based on "sales in my area". He said that there was a ~$1000 deduction for "excessive mileage". My bike has 16k on it. Cash value for my bike was $3480, and the ~$1000 deduction took it down to $2480, plus $65 for the value of the case guards.

$2500 for a 2004 GS500?! WHAT A LOAD OF shaZam!!!

THEN I figure out that he has the mileage wrong, and he's registering it as having over 20k miles, and therefore his estimate is wrong too. I sent him a fax (because no one in State Farm has an e-mail address, apparently) with the list of things I did and how they increase the bike's value. He should call me back later today and I can haggle for the best price I can get.

Wow, have fun.  Insurance is the biggest pain, EVER.  I know you wont let them screw you, but its not going to be a pleasant process.
