The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

Ehh, it's cool.. I flipped out the other day, I'm pretty sure that's why Todd is pissed.. I made a pretty upset thread.. I was having a bad week, and the GS not cooperating was the last straw..

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

QuotePersonally when a new member gets a new bike I like to see what they got and what they think about the new bike, or how they compare the GS.

So does everyone else here...fact is, though, no one likes a punk.

Hi again,
Mak, that's exactly what I was meaning when I posted my comments.
And I'm so sick of people here lately cursing about everything, especially to other people on the board.
Let's all be adults.
I'm glad to hear about everyone's toys here.
But I certainly believe that riding a motorcycle takes time to learn well and you don't always get a second chance.
Buying a bigger bike after 5,000 miles on a 500 is likely not enough. It's not the miles, it's the learning. It's learning how to make good judgements and learning how to handle a myriad of real-world, on the street situations.
And it's being adult enough to listen when others tell you their personal opinion after you make a public declaration about some powerful, faster new toy you bought.
Mak is right, we only say something because we don't want our friends and fellow riders here to get themselves hurt.
We've had enough experiences lately with gstwin.com comrades who are no longer with us due to riding accidents.
Life can be inherently unsafe, but we do what we want because to do otherwise, life wouldn't be worth living.
So let's be careful out there when we make choices that we may not be ready to face.
Good luck with your new bike Metallic. It is very nice.
But if you go out there on it thinking you are "ready" now for a 1000 because you put 5,000 miles on a 500, you are kidding yourself.
Learn it slowly, what it can do, what it can't do. Learn how it stops, turns, slides and everything else.
I don't see a 500 as a "beginner's bike."
I've been riding for 31 years and have owned a great group of motorcycles from twins to fours. I came back to a 500 twin after years on a four-cylinder because it is cheap, easy to live with on a daily basis, easy to work on and doesn't have the hassles of water cooling and other more intensive maintenance issues.
As someone with over 100,000 of miles on motorycles and 31 years under my belt, I think our GS500s are great all-purpose motorcycles for beginners to experts.
It ain't the meat, it's the emotion. :)
Have fun with your new bike and be careful out there, bub.
Best wishes,
Todd

Shut the f*ck up or I'll tell my mommy.

I agree.  It's a courtesy thing.  I hope you have enough maturity to realize your limits.  I do hate people, but I hate seeing bad things happen to people unless they truely deserve it.

And Blue...  I GOT LAID!!!

I can see why Metallic got upset. I can remember a half dozen posts where someone got a new bike, someone asked how long they'd ridden their gs, and people not considering the mileage enough for the upgrade...An's post could have gone either way, although it had a tinge of "not enough miles, for sure" on it.

Metallic, congratulations on your new bike. take it easy at first until you are really familiar with the bike.

I dunno I think 5k might be enough miles to upgrade depending on the bike. I've had my GS for 3 yrs now and closing in on 17k and I think with enough training and some instruction 5k could be enough miles. Maybe not, I'm not quite sure. But to all of you getting new bikes congrats and kiss my ass.  :flipoff: :kiss3: To be blunt, if I had the cash I'd had  upgraded to a SV long ago. I'm glad I went with a GS for my first bike though I almost got a Nighthawk 250. Since I'm stuck with the GS atleast its fun enough and able to do some touring.

I think only you can know your limits. Its fine for someone to ask your milage on your current bike and keep their opinions to themselves. However if they start telling you that you havn't got enough experience then its not right. Obviously there are limits like 0 miles experience and streight onto a busa or 500 miles and onto a busa. But you can never know what metallic's 5k miles have been spent doing. He may have been riding all year in the twisties in rain snow and ice - gaining far more experience than some highmilage members 20k or so who have never seen a corner and have just ridden the motorways (highways) all the time. Just an example of how you can not know.

I put 8k on my 50cc bike which had 8bhp and moved onto a zxr400 ex race bike with around 78bhp . And have not a single problem and have actually been much safer and a better rider for it. You have to know what your capable of and listen to the advice from others but don't take their abusive comments.

i appreciate all the comp's nd respect!!  one BIG BIG reason for gettingthis bike was b/c it had 0 miles on it.  So i know that for a few days i will be NOT getting on it at all.  And slowly making my way to where i can. and thats what i like...  my 500 was already broken in w. 1500 miles, and i hammered on it right away, but onthe 500, hammering on it aint going to send you straight up, unless it wouldve had a 14T on it or something...  bt i took a safety course through our local bike shop, start on a scooter, then a 250 rebel, then a 600 cruiser...  so i was real happy to hop on my 500 after riding a scooter and a fwe croosers!!

I did take an M109 out for a spin.......  HOLY SCHITE!!!!!  that thing is amazing...  1800cc of broosin croosin!!  that was sooo unbelievable...  aabsolutely loved that bike...
