Are parts interchangable between a 1990 and a 2001 GS500?

I just got my first GS500 and heard that they're not making any more after this year.  This makes me wonder if parts are going to get sparce and if I should buy  a parts bike that someone has offered me.  My bike is a 2001 and the bike the guy offered me is a '90.  I don't even know if the majority of the parts are interchangeable.  Any feedback would be appreciated.

Some are, some aren't.  Carbs?  No.  body parts?  No.  There's no oil cooler on the 90.  The timing system is different.  I'm sure there's more.

But it's pretty much the same bike.

And where did you hear that they aren't making any more?

lots of parts are interchangable but a few arent-brakes changed in 93/94, bodywork (and corresponding mounting points) on 2001 dont fit 1989-2000 model years. Where are you located that you think they're not being made anymore. There are currently NEW gs500's-2001-2006 (less 2003 model year in the states) are all mostly the same.

there's no oil cooler on the 2001 either. that only came on the gs500F in 2004(?).

One of the sales reps at a local bike shop in Santa Cruz said that both Suzuki and Kawasaki are going to be releasing new lines to replace the GS500 and its Kawasaki equivilent...I think he meant a ninja500 or 250R or something.  I don't know if he was legit or not.

Dont worry about parts......new and secondhand will be around long after the bike is pulled.

I call  :bs:    I guess they will get replaced eventually, but like posted above, the 07 models are already out.  Not to mention that used parts will be around for a while, and so will new parts.

I've heard talk of them replacing the EX's with the Ninja 650 on here, but I've not heard anything but wild speculation that the GS was going away.  I see plenty of EX250s and GS500s, so there's still a market.  Since they've not changed significantly in 15 or so years, I don't see why they'd stop making a bike that sells.
