I discovered the best reason NOT to wreck tonight

Cuz riding for 2 hours on the pillion seat of an R1 is HELL!!!!!!!! Oh no, wait, that wasn't it... Cuz calling the owner of the bike you just balled up SUCKS... even when they're cool like Dave.. Probably the worse phone call I've ever had to make.. even worse than when I called to tell my parents that I went to the ER cuz I lit my own hand on fire...

So yeah.. I wrecked again today... on Dave's bike.. and it was bad. Like.. totalled bad. Granted, insurance hasn't looked at it.. but I'm pretty sure they'll take one look and say "Yep.. totalled".

I was riding with some people from Georgia Sport Bike. We were cruising the Cherohala skyway, on our way to Deal's gap. The plan was to eat lunch at DG, then run the dragon once, then head home. Of course, I had to screw that up... With about 10 miles left of the skyway, we came into a decreasing radius downhill right hander. We'd been running a good pace all day, about 70mph average. Came into the turn, Shannon (the girl in front of me) came in too hot, and fixated on the guard rail.. came pretty close to hitting it, but pulled it out. I was conscientiously watching her, to make sure she was ok. Then I looked at where I was going. "Oh.. hello guardrail".. I stood it up, got on the brakes... and target fixated right on that rail.. my guess is that I hit it somewhere between 45-60mph.. but that's just a guess. I hit at an angle, not HEAD on.. thank God. I remember the impact, and then I remember rolling ass over elbows down the road. I use the momentum from my last somersault to leap to my feet.. that's right, I was on my feet before I even stopped tumbling.. cuz I'm good like that. Of course, immediately after I stood up, I started yelling obscenities at myself for being so stupid and wrecking a bike that's NOT MINE. Man, was I pissed. So then we dragged (yes, dragged) the bike to the side of the road, to assess our options.

First, we surveyed the damage:

Forks are trash.. bent back and sideways. There's melted rubber on the headers from the tire melting onto them.

Bars.. well, they look like a crazy straw. If insurance totals it, and Dave buys it back, I'm gonna ask to keep them.

Controls: I honestly don't remember... probably not in the best of shape.

Plastics are ALL trash. Tail included.

Right side foot controls/heel guard/peg are bent forwards a good bit... looks like the bike was sliding backwards on that side.

Exhaust is scraped to hell, came disconnected at the midpipe. Probably still functional, though.

For some reason, the plate on the right side adjustment bolt thingie is off and loose, spinning around the bolt. Makes me wonder if the rear wheel is completely torqued to one side or something.

That's all I can think of for now. Not pretty. I feel pretty miserable. I have pics, but getting them off the camera phone requires a cable that I don't want to buy.. if I find one, I'll put pics up.

Damage to me: My back hurts, a lot. Not the spine, but the muscles on the right.. I'm fairly certain I hit the guard rail at least once during my tumbling. My legs hurt.. I think I hit one/both of them on either the tank or the bars on my way off the bike. A VERY minor patch of rash on my forearm where the mesh of my jacket tore, no big deal.. I've had worse from tripping and falling whilst walking.  I can't walk very well right now.. I'm taking tylenol for the pain/swelling.. not helping much.. I need an electric blanket...

So we went to Wheeler's by Deal's Gap.. guy was great, helped me out a lot. Called the tow truck, also a great guy who helped me out a lot. Long story short, the bike is currently resting in North Carolina. I am more or less healthy. I will live. Unless Dave strangles me. Which I probably deserve, for being retarded.

I'm tired and in pain.. I'm gonna try to go to sleep now.

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

ice, no heat. Ice is better for muscle pain. if your legs are really painful, i suggest taking an ice bath. Fill the tub half way with cold cold water, then add bags of ice and climb in for as long as you can handle. get out, dry off, sit with your back on the ground and feet up a wall for about 15-20 mins, then stretch as best you can. repeat as many times as nessesary, but i wouldn't do more than once a day...

Nick I told you on the phone not to worry the insurance will cover it.  I also left you voice mail.  If your in pain call the insurance co. they will cover, hell I have been paying for insurance someone might as well use it

The insurance co. is going to send a guy out there sometime this week.  Probally monday at least thats what the lady on the phone said.  You gotta post some pic's of the bike incase I never see it again.

Yeah your front rim was on my bike right?  When you bring back my original rim I have another front rim you can have no charge.

Seriously man get some rest, don't worry about the bike, and if you have to just call the insurance co and tell them you felt fine after the accident but when you woke up this morning you were in pain.  They already told me they would take care of the bill.

Dave, you are quite possibly the coolest person on this board.

That being said, I wouldn't loan him another bike.  :icon_mrgreen:

NGFL, I'm glad you're not hurt.  That could have been bad.  I'd have kicked your ass if you got yourself killed.
Sorry, I won't answer motorcycle questions anymore.  I'm not f%$king friendly enough for this board.  Ask me at:

haha that reminds me of the last time I had a major encounter with the asphault...come off a luge-board at about 50~55mph, landed flat on my back with enough force that I bounced into a back flip and hit the ground running and cursing cuz I just wrecked and screwed up $400 worth of materials and trashed 18 hours of work...oh and I rashed myself up pretty good (no gear...dumbass...)

middlem2

Dang, glad to hear you are alright.  That sounded scary....but I would like to try this Dragons Tail sometime maybe not in a group though....that's not always good.

indywar360

damn. Yeah that sucks, but as other people always say, at least you're still in one piece.  :dunno_white: Not everyone who has wrecked at fwy speeds can say that.

Now you've purged the demons of other riders who fear a sudden death on the fwy. The bike goes back to the Universe, the gods are happy, and the rest of the community is spared.  :icon_twisted:

Insurance covers another rider on your own bike? I didn't know that... lucky thing too.

It does when you omit certain details...like someone else being on your bike.

Nope told them the truth, that I let my friend Nick borrowed my bike and that he had an accident.  She called me back a few hrs later to make sure that Nick didn't have to goto the hospital and that he wasn't hurt bad.  And that this would not effect my insurance premiums.

I hurt more in the shoulder/arm areas today.. but my back actually feels BETTER than last night... I slept on a sofa, cuz I couldn't get up the stairs to go to my bed.... It still hurts to walk, if I do it wrong.. and I still make random "ow" noises... but I'll live...
