I'm thinking of removing the muffler on my 2004 GS500F. Can anyone give me a good site or tell me some helpfull tips on how I can do this? The only reason Im doing it is because the other day I teaching my brother to ride it and when he got about 20 yards away, I could hardly hear the bike. I began to think that nobody on the road couldhear me, especially if they are in their cars with music on. Or if I'm just on the freeway. i would like to get a better exhaust, but cannot afford it right now. So taking out the muffler will have to do. I have research the sounds that the GS500 makes without the muffler and it doesnt sound to bad. So please, can someone tell me how I can take it out? Thanks.

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

When I installed my new exhaust, I fired up the bike with no muffler at all and revved it a few times.  Ya have to, ya know?  :thumb:

First, the not-so-obvious...  This will most definitely decrease the drivability of the bike.  You will lower exhaust gas velocity enough that the low-RPM scavenging will be severely affected.  The bike will have even less low end power.  You will also have to rejet the carbs due to it being severely lean.

Nextly, the obvious...  The GS500 without a muffler is completely unbearable.  The exhaust volume was enough to cause wrenches and miscellaneous things in my shop to vibrate off of tables 40 feet away.  I'm not joking.  I had on hearing protection and it was STILL loud enough to damage my hearing.  I'm not joking.

It would be severely illegal and totally crazy.

You want loud? ...  buy the V&H full system.. I took mine off cause it was too loud for me... The GS sounded like a Harley Davidson lawn mower  :thumb:

Most 4cyl bikes sound better/cooler w/ after market pipes... IMO the GS sounds much worse with one  :thumb:

+1 otherwise it's going to be to loud.

I think the GS sounds much better with an aftermarket exhaust.  But then again I don't even remember what a stock exhaust sounds like anymore.  I do remember being happy when I got my new exhaust put on, sounded much better to me.

I have a Vance & Hines muffler system on my GS (came with it when I bought it). The shop that was trying to sell it said they had some takers but all said it was too loud. Since I never owned a motorcycle before and the only one I was around was my Uncle's Yamaha Roadstar (LOUD), I couldn't tell if it was loud or not. I like the sound as it sound like a chopper when at idle and then a sport bike whine at high RPMs. The pipe looks cool too. The only problem I have is that I have to unbolt the exhaust from the head to change the oil filter. You can pick one up for $270 on the bay. In the end, I'm not sure what the stock muffler sounded like but I do like the Vance & Hines.

The stock muffler sounds like this

Hi kazokazo,
I hate to say this, but motorcycles don't have to be loud.
It is nice when they are quiet and don't offend the communities in which we all live.
In my 31 years of riding I must say, loud motorcycles are the enemy of all of us.
Loud exhausts DO NOT save lives.
Riding well and carefully, having loud HORNS (see earlier posts on installing LOUD HORNS to better protect yourself -- this is where you can make a difference) and always assuming that the idiots around you in their cars and trucks are trying to KILL you are the best ways to stay alive and enjoy our beloved sport.
Leave the quiet exhaust alone -- don't give your community another reason to hate motorcyclists.
I even hate motorcyclists with loud exhausts and I ride one.
Of course people will disagree with all of this, but they're talking nonsense.
Loud is not safer. It's just stupid.
That's similar to the idiotic argument that it's safer to ride without a helmet because helmets make it difficult to hear what the traffic around you is doing.
Another moronic myth.
Respect others in our communities and we can all gain respect.
Be careful out there.
Yours,
Todd

I set off one car alarm on average every time I ride my Duc.  Makes me grin ear to ear.  Its a simple pleasure, I'll admit, but I'm a simple fella.

If it comes out of your body you shouldn't be afraid to hold it in your hand! :o

Turd Ferguson

Yeah...that guy sounds even simpler than I!  When rolling through our downtown area with lots of cars parked on the street, I'll usually set of one car alarm per block.  My bike really isn't that loud, just extremely bassy.

Don't.  People with loud pipes are giant f%$king douchebags.  You don't want to be a giant f%$king douchebag, do you?
Sorry, I won't answer motorcycle questions anymore.  I'm not f%$king friendly enough for this board.  Ask me at:

I gotta say...I prefer the Ducati thumping sound over the GS' whatever it sounds like with a good Yosh pipe.

Definitely better tone from the Yosh than the stocker, but still not a big Italian twin.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna buy the ST2 off my dad.  It's nice.  I like.

S2R 800 or 1000?  Either way, the S2R is an awesome bike.

1) Making your bike louder may give you the misconception that more cars will notice you & you'll be safer on the road.  Please don't be deceived.
2) This may cause you to let your guard down and be less alert, because you'll think cagers will actually notice you and not run you over.
3) I've had people look me in the eye & change lanes into me regardless.  Always assume you're invisible!

Buy an aftermarket pipe.... dont fool with you stock exhaust. If you start chopping up your stock stuff than you will be sorry. Your going to be buying a air filter and  jets (jet kit) if you chop your stock exhaust. The bike will run brutal... even with aftermarket filter and jets you may still not get a solid running bike. Then you will need to buy an aftermarket exhaust cause your bike wont run with out one. So after all that time chopping the stock exhuast and wasting it you will still be at the stage of all new pipe, jets and filter. So dont waste your time and do it right is what im saying. Besides you can probably get a $100 - $200 for your stock pipe.

OHHH and for all of you who are against loud pipes..... you go ahead and run your stock pipes and see how long it takes before you hit that kid running after a ball, the senior citizen who steps off a side walk in front of you or that deer that dashes out of the woods, cause they cant hear your sissy sounding excuse for a motorcycle that they mistake for a mosquito.

LOUD PIPES DONT SAVE LIVES ????? Go post on the john deere website with all the other weed whackin, lawn fertilizing upper class bob villas that you think you are....

and if you think its not you and just your "neighbours" keeping you from having a sweet sounding bike... than push your bike out of your suburban paradise, fire it up and SAVE A LIFE!

Thank you.
