a friend and i were talking about the GS and he was trying to convince me not to install an ignition advancer on the grounds that it is an air cooled enging so it will make the bike run too hot in out texas summers and fry the engine.  our summer days get over 100 degrees and the nights can easily stay in the 90's.  is there any validity to his story or is he blowing smoke?  thanks...

The advancer only works at below 3k so it wont make much of a difference. After that the advance is a lot higher than the advancer is set to anyway so no it wont make a difference other than making the low end of the bike better.

By rejetting the bike and thus making the fir/fuel mixture closer to 12.5:1 you would cool down combustion temps far more than a few degrees of advance and I am not even sure that the advancer would make the combustion temps rise at all.

I guess what I am trying to say is jetting is the biggest factor when it comes to combustion temps.  The richer a mix the cooler the temp.

I live in south Louisiana and your friend, how can I put this, is full of bull&*%$.  I have gone through 2 hot summers down here with no problems at all.  The advancer does not make it run any hotter than it normally would.

Exactly.  You folks know how you have to rev it up to take off?  With the advancer and a 15 tooth front sprocket, mine will roll off from a stop sign without touvhing the throttle now.  No more stalling for me when taking off going up a hill. :nana:

You sure you have a GS...Stalling or wanting to stall on letting the clutch out even with throttle is one of its main features...

I wish I had a video camera.  My friend didn't believe it could be done either.  Left hand on grip, right hand on the tank.  Eased out on the clutch very slowly and off I went. :nana:  :mrgreen:
