throttle issue?

Hello all,

So my bike was having problems maintaining a constant idle (would fluctuate).  This saturday I took the carbs apart and cleaned them.  When I start the engine back up it now idles ok.  But now I seem to have another issue.  I open up the throttle, less than a 1/4 turn and the engine revs up to like 5000 rpm and seems to stay there for like a second before  coming back down.  Moreover a funny noise seems to come out of the muffler? Like a low drone noise as if the engine was bogging down. I checked the throttle cable to see if it was too tight but it isnt.  I am pretty sure there are no leaks in the fuel system.  Any ideas?? :dunno_white: :dunno_white:
thanks...

Have you checked clutch / choke cables?  I was having a similar issue and just ordered a cable lube kit.

When you put the carbs back together, are you sure the needles and slides went back in place properly?
It may be possible that the needles and slides did not drop down far enough into place when you put the carbs back together. Also check your float heights.... or maybe just double check everything you did when you took your carbs apart  :dunno_white:.

Sounds like a carb. issue to me.

Thanks I'll look at the carbs again.  Yes I want to say it is a carb thing.  One thing I did when I took them apart was also to unscrew the idle screw (although I made sure to go out the same number of turns as it was previously set to) Can this be part of the problem?  Again it just seems that the throttle doesnt gradually rev up through the turn of the wrist.  It just reaches 5000+ rpm with only a slight twist... thanks.

The idle screw affects idle only. If your not sure how many turns in or out you are at, than just start the bike and set it to approximately to 1500 Rpm (going by your tach.). Is your bike modified at all ?

It isn't modified that I know of.  If I set it to 1500 rpm with the pilot screws alone,  what should I do with the big adjusting screw, because that too will affect the rpm at idle?  Should I turn it out all the way before I try reaching 1500 rpm with the pilot screws alone?

thanks

well the big white knob it your idle screw adjuster.... if your bike is not at 1500 rpm at idle, than use that to adjust it.

Rev it up and then let it come back down to idle and adjust again if neccessary.
