I bought a 96 gs500 (first bike).. didn't really know what to check for...and I got screwed.

Left cylinder wasnt firing, took it to a shop and they checked the carbs.  The left one was not feeding gas to the engine.  They fixed that and the bike started firing on both cylinders, but now it is letting out a bunch of thick blue smoke (burning oil).  Turns out theres something wrong in the engine (low compression on the left), either rings, pistons, or valves.

Shop thinks that the previous owner intentionally messed up the left carb so that it wouldnt give gas to the left cylinder and smoke like a bastard while they tried to sell it.

I've already spent too much at the shop and I need to take it home and work on it myself.  But, because its burning so much oil, the mechanics don't think ill be able to make it home.

What I need to do is find some way to cut fuel to the left so that it'll run like it was before (only off the right cylinder).  That way ill at least be able to get it home and work on it.

Any ideas on how i can stop fuel from getting to the left cylinder without messing with the jets?  Or does anyone have any other ideas besides fuel restriction to temporarily  :laugh:stop the left side from firing?

Find somebody with a pickup.  I'd do it, but I'm back in IL now.   :icon_confused:

Don't try to ride it home.  If it shits out on the side of the road you'll have to pay for a tow truck.  $$$$

One thought:  Home Depot rents pickups.  $20 for the first 75 minutes.  No experience renting from them though.
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?

How long ago did you buy the bike?

Is there a "lemon" law in CA?  Here in MA, if you paid over a certain amount for a vehicle (I think $600) then it HAS to be able to pass inspection...  otherwise the seller needs to take care of it or give you a refund.

So no ideas on how to stop the left cyl from running?
Is there anything that i can plug up?
Can i somehow disconnect the cable from the spark plug and attach it to something else to prevent it from sparking?
Are there any hoses i can clamp or disconnect and cap?

Some of the ideas i had, just don't know if they're feasible

Remove the plug wire and ground it to the frame.

One additional problem with your plan to ride home:

When you run an engine with a dead cylinder for anything more than a few seconds the fuel mixture begins to condense on the cylinder walls.  This fuel acts like a solvent to the oil film and washes it away.  Extended running of a dead cylinder (minutes to hours) will cause increased cylinder and ring wear, reducing compression.  The condensed fuel will also blow by the rings and enter the crankcase, diluting the oil.

Also see my post in your Other thread about Running with a Broke or Stuck Ring.

Or Remove the Sparkplug Lead and Attach another Sparkplug with the electrode Bent Closed and tied to the Frame or Motor grounding it out.
If it's Not Broke Modify it.
