Hello everyone.. and I wrecked it already, can someone help?

Hello everyone, my name is Keny and I've receltly bought a 06 gs500f with 200 miles on it, that had been laid over and totaled out already.  I bought it for just under 2k so I'm pretty happy with it.  It ran good, but the things that was/is wrong with it is that the muffler was scuffed, the (alternator?) cover was scratched and the farring had some rash on it.  Otherwise it was fine.
This is my first bike and my first time riding one also.
So i've had it for about 3 weeks now and was getting confident on it.  I took a right turn going faster that I should and laid it over.  It slid for a few feet on the right side,  I was uninjured.. just ripped the overpants and scuffed the jacket a little.
The farring was a little askew but i've straightened it out.
The right (alternator?) cover has come off and was then ran over by a passing car.
The mirror and brake handle are scratched up.
But the main thing is now the throttle is sticky (it doesn't spring back, just stays where you leave it).

Since I've worked on plenty of cars but never worked on bikes I was wondering if someone could help me out.
1. How do I replace or fix the throttle handle?
2. I plan on going to a motorcycle junkyard to replace the entire (alternator?) cover but is there a gasket and if so is it reusable?
3. Where can I find a repair manual?

Thanks to anyone that can help out.

1. You can order these from online parts sources for fairly cheap, check out www.bikebandit.com or www.ronayers.con or www.mrcycles.com

2. I assume you are talking about the piece with the S logo on it, because if you are it does not use a gasket

The throttle cable might be sticking / damaged, or you might just have some dirt under the grip that's preventing it from rolling smoothly.  You'll have to unscrew the plastic casing with the starter button, remove the throttle tube and inspect it.

ya you might just have something that is holding your throttle tube so it wont turn.  bar end maybe?  Also to find parts and manuals or anything bike related you can always find it at your dealer.

I'm selling my Clymer manual.  It's the same one that you can get from the link above.

Thanks about taking off the plastic piece with the start button on it.. I thought that was how I took it apart but I was worried about accidentally opening up the brake resivore.  It has pieces inserted into the ends of the handlebars, the right one was bent and scuffed up really badly, when I pulled it off.  It looks like the small lip, at the edge of the handlebar, is bent back slightly, biting into the plastic throtle tube.  I will pull it apart tomorow and try to carress it back into shape (carress it gently with a hammer  :icon_razz:).
Unfortunatelly when this happened most of the dealerships and moto salvage yards were already closed or closing very quickly.  I just thought I would ask here so I could know excatelly what I need monday when I go someplace to pick up the required replacement parts.  The posted websites look good but i'm to impatient to wait... at least for something needed for it to run, I want to get back on the horse asap.  I love riding this thing.. even if it is scratched up a little it still runs like a champ.

you sound like me- good with cars, fresh to bikes, and got a little too confident in a corner, only i made it 2 months before i laid it down. REMEMBER! the center line is NOT your friend! It hates you! Especially when your crossing it leaning into the corner, at 1am and it's pretty damp out... good luck with your repairs... hope it doesn't take you as long to gather parts as it has for me. ofcourse i had to replace more....

Your alternator/generator is under the left side engine cover. The small right side cover comes off with three bolts. Under it is the crankshaft position sensor assembly. Did the entire small cover come off -- meaning you sheared the bolts or busted the cover enough to come off -- or did the thinner adhesive backed decorative cover come off the bolt-on cover?

Your crank position sensor is probably OK since the bike runs, so if it is just the adhesive backed decorative cover, those are cheap and available online.

Yes it was jut the thin decorative cover piece (about as thick as a few sheets of aluminum foil) the actual cover is still on just scratched up.  So the three bolt cover is over the crank position sensor, does it work like the distributor in cars?  The center bolt of the sensor doesn't seem centered in the opening, but it is pretty close, and there is absolutely no abrasion on the bolt.  It also runs fine, so I believe that, in exception to the throttle, there is no functionality problems resulting in the crash/laydown.
Thanks for everyones help.. I guess I just felt kinda helpless due to all the moto dealers and shops being closed when this happened and I had no-one to turn to for advise on how to fix it.

Oh.. and Ann, I might be interested in that manual of yours.. I'll let you know shortly, either way I decide.

oh and one more question, what is the piece that sticks out of the handle called?

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

In short, yes, but not really. The distributor is a rotary switch for the ignition high voltage to the spark plugs.  In the case of the GS -- your 2006 to be specific -- there is a coil that senses the lobe of the rotary portion attached to the crankshaft. When the lobe passes the coil, a signal is sent to the ECU (engine control unit) to tell it where the crankshaft is. If the valves are adjusted correctly and the cam chain tension/alignment are correct, the ECU knows when to command spark to the plugs.

This is normal and good. Be thankful.

Are you referring to the end of the handlebar?

If it is a knob looking item, that would be a handlebar balancer. They are used to dampen vibration of the bar.

(niceguy beat me to it....!)

They also generate some revenue for Suzuki when we drop our bikes and break them off.

I am not sure for the 2006, but the early models had handlebars with a threaded welded insert in them. The mounting screw for the balancer connected to the insert. The later models may have expansion types that cause a member to wedge into the bar while the screw is tightend.

Now I'm confused.

What I see is two coils on this signal generator assembly. In 2003+ Suzuki switched to one coil.

At least they say so in their OEM service manual.

What year bike is this again? I see a yellow fender. That means either 2004 or 1999 (edited) or a repaint.

Mine is an 06, those pics are not my bike but someone else's posted for my reference I believe, and thks btw for posting them.  The peice thats all scraped up is the part that covers the bolt in the pictures.  It is held on by three bolts and has a hole in the center.  The part that is missing is the little disk-like piece that covers the hole.
Thanks guys, I appreciate all the help.
