Breaking in Period

Luckily for me I came across this site while looking into the prospect of buying a nice shiny new GS500. I thought I would canvas opinion as to the "breaking in" period. The general consensus seems gently gently with lots of Rev variation, but I came across this web site which has a totally different opinon and thought I would try and get some tips on whether the guy is mad or not from you experts  8)

In case you are interested I am upgrading from a Honda CM125 C which does 0-60 eventually :cry: After test riding a GS500 I can't sleep any more

I have heard that both methods will work.  Other discussions on this topic came to a general consensus of "It's your bike, break it in the way you feel is best".

I have a friend that has a ZRX1100 with 35,000 miles that broke his in that way and he has had no problems with it sso far.

I have broken-in bikes using both methods. And he is correct. Now, because of the street, and its variables, the potential that the oil used by the dealer may be synthetic, and other variables that he has discussed, and the fact the I am an old rider and mechanic, I still would extend the break-in process. But only to the 600 miles indicated by the manufacturer. I don't know what manufacturer's are sugessting today for break-in, but when I was selling, wrenching and racing m/c's there was another 400-600 miles of break-in after the initial 600 mile break-in. This additional break-in is what I ignored, and in my little 1987 Yamaha SRX250 single, she was the spunkiest little underpowered 250 for the 14 years I owned her.
