Clutch cable issues........

Hello everyone! 

I am new to motorcycles and teaching myself through all of the tremendous instruction on this site.  Thanks everyone

I own a '97 GS500 that I purchased off a guy here in Maryland through this site.

I can't leave well enough alone and I didn't like the riding position on my GS, so when I saw an 89 triple tree with all controls on ebay a week ago, I bought it.  I finally recieved it in the mail yesterday and went to installing it last night. 

Everything went well and I used all my existing controls and just slid everything right on.  Once it was all tightened down I went to straightening out all the controls and making sure everything was good'n'tight.  I pulled the clutch in a few times and on the third or fourth time it popped and the clutch stayed at the grip when I let it go.  I pulled the rubber boot off the back of  the handle and the cable and the screw looked fine on that end.  I pulled the boot off of the cable at the case end and it appeared to be fine there as well. 

Questions:

1.  Is there any way the cable could have popped out of its holder in the sprocket case?  I did let the bars hang by the cables for a few minutes while I affixed the other side of the grips. 

2.  If it is broken in some way........  Is there any difference between the '89 cable (part number 58200-01D00) and the '90-'01 cable (part number 58200-01D11) other than length.  I noticed that all of my cables were a little long now that the bars are lower.  I would like to get the '89 cable but I just don't know if there is another difference. 

I have searched the site for information and nothing quite matched this situation so I thought I would ask.

I don't mean to be obvious but its sounds like your cable broke.
Take the end out of the lever and see if you can pull it out of the housing. If so it broke. Shouldn't be to hard to replace, but dunno, never had to do it.
Try the to search clutch cable or broken cable... Should turn up some info.

The 89 Clutch Cable is Specific to that Model.It may Not just be the Length it could be the Angle of the end of the cable at the Lever. :dunno_white: :dunno_white:

Sounds like you snapped the cable.  No big deal, $12 and half an hour to install.  Better to have it happen in the garage than on the road.  I replace clutch cables on a regular cycle due to that very problem.  It's just as well, when I bought my 96 the clutch was so stiff it took two hands to pull it in when cold.   :laugh:

About the specific clutch cables; I also have the '89 setup on my bike.  When I compared the 96 cable I removed to the new 89 cable the only difference I recall was that the 96 was slightly longer.  My logbook shows that I installed the 58200-01D00 for the '89 models.  I suggest you do the same.  Depending on how much slack you have in the brake line, now might be a good time to switch to a stainless line.  :)

While you're in the sprocket cover be sure to disassemble, clean, and lubricate the clutch pushrod actuator.  That area fills with dirt, sand, and contaminated chain lube  All of that will lead to sluggish clutch action with poor feel.

Be sure to carefully locate the wiring harness.  It's possible for it to get caught between the steering stops or catch and make steering diffcult.  Be careful to provide enough room for the wires to move with the steering.   :thumb:

Nah I'm still waiting on the cable from Ronayers.  I guess Christmas time isn't the best time to be ordering stuff online.  I went to the stealer but they were going to have to order it as well. 

Would anyone like me to take pictures of the replacement for the WIKI site?

1/2 hour to install ... OK if you were in the freezing cold, dark and had both hands hand cuffed and no tools ... OK I exaggerate ...
Tie a shoe lace to one end of the cable and pull the cable out at the other end ... that will let the show string sit in place of the old cable. Put the new cable in by tying its corresponding end to the shoe string and pulling it back in. Then your cable is in perfect position and you just secure the ends. Simple. Yea make sure none of the cable ties in the middle are going to get in the way ... though if a cable will fit inside it, show string will not be a problem. Wiggle and pull gently ... no gorillaing the thing in there ... I know, that's what got you in this position ... but please break that habit before you start breaking more than just the cable.
