So a brief story... I went to a popular resturaunt/bar in orange county the other night with some friends after a play and low and behold they wouldn't let me in with my backpack. I borrow a friends keys to put it in his truck and toss in my heavy jacket too (no sense in taking up extra room in the resturaunt). Anyway when we come back out I followed with him to his truck only mysterously it was in a different spot than the one i had left my stuff in. As it turns out his key to an old toyota truck, opened up an identical truck in the same parking lot and someone drove off with my jacket and pack!! Luckily there was nothing really important in either except for the initial investment and some keys i don't use often, but still...what a pain in the ass! Now i've gotta go and shell out a couple hundred dollars for another jacket and dig up a backpack that probably won't serve me as well as that old one did....

Anyone else opened up the wrong vehicle with the right keys before?? I've never heard of it happening...stupid Toyota. Anyway, thats my rant. >:(

It probably scared the crap outta the guy who went to get into his truck and someone's backpack and jacket were in there!

He may have turned them in to the restaurant, or even filed a police report about finding strange gear inside his truck.   You never know.   Give the local police a call, you might save yourself a couple hundred bucks.

the first thing i did was call my insurance agent to get a duplicate proof certificate and to let them know someone might be trying to trak me down...but so far no word. Its only been a couple days and there wasn't any direct way to contact me in my stuff, but there was insurance info as well as registration....I'm hoping the holidays will get someone in the mood to put in a little effort.

There are only a certain number of key conbinations...  I've heard of this happening in other parts of the country.

I hope the owner of the mystery vehicle is a good samaritan. :thumb:

yeah, happens more often with older cars that have old, worn keys. Used to happen with my 240z.

Happened to me borrowing a friend's Dodge (Shadow?)  I was looking for it in a big dark parking lot and thought I found it.  So I unlock the door and get in... but it was a stick and her car was an auto.  So I got back out, locked the door and kept looking for the right car.  Never tried the ignition though

Newer cars these days have laser cut keys which are much more accurate and therefore they can get more combinations making it harder and almost impossible to find another car they will fit into. However the odds change as they car gets older.

I saw one of these answer the big question science programs once and they were trying to see how many cars they could get one set of keys to fit. But funnily enough as they key wore down the original cars couldn't be unlocked but more could hehehe. Fun.

if you own a 3rd gen eclipse .. they have one master key that will unlock any door but with the way the car is  set up you wont be able to start it unless you have it programed ... i found out the hard way when i lost my keys .. he was like what year ..... ok i'll give you a dead key and you can atleast get your door open  and put it in N so that you can get it up here ...... that was a fun day ..
