Hello.
Just found out about this great board. So hello everyone.

I know I should of read the other manuals but there are just too much information to me to handle at once. :)
But I do have a questions about my oldie GS. I bought it last week from some guy and already ran into some troubles
My motor seems worked fine at the beginnig but now i noticed alot of oil all over the motor,
I tried to clean it out to figure out where it came from but to vain. It doesnt seems to come from anywhere, yet my bike eat
alot of oil. Of course i can handle it to a garage, but i prefer to do all the fixes my self.
Any manuals pointers or advices are welcome. Thanks.

Definitely learn how to work on your bike yourself. It makes for a very satisfying experience riding a bike that you remedied yourself. You should have seen my 1997 when I first got it. It was so unreliable that I was too afraid to ride it to the end of the driveway. Now it's in great shape even though it shows almost 7000 more miles than it originally had.

Oil leaks aren't too hard to fix. The engine configuration is so simple you could tear down the whole top end without too much time and money. If the motor hasn't been too abused or very high miles it may just mean replacing the valve cover gasket, tensioner gasket, or something similiar. My tensioner was actually leaking through the body so that's something to watch out for too. Just pull the rubber plug out and look to see if there's any oil inside of it. If so you'll need a new tensioner. Good luck with the bike.

Hi there, welcome to the board.

The first step to finding an oil leak is to thoroughly wash down the entire engine with engine cleaner.  Let it dry thoroughly, then start up the bike.  Use a flashlight to inspect for new leaks.  If nothing shows up after a few minutes, take a ride around the block once or twice.  If it's more than just a little seepage you should see the leak by then.

The most common locations for oil leakage are the valve cover, shift rod seal, and cam chain tensioner.

Good luck!
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

Hi there,
Yes, welcome to our world. :)
We can help with the oil leak and anything else that comes up.
First, do as was suggested above and clean the engine well and then start it up and look for leaks.
Off the top of my head it could be a valve cover gasket that is leaking (will pour lots of oil quickly all over --easy to replace), a tach cable oil seal --easy to replace, a head gasket -- not so easy to replace, but don't worry about this yet.
Let us know what you find.
Best wishes,

Have no idea, in the speedometer it says 23K but it can be replaced or overrun or been disconnected so its rough guess

lol Thanks, I do have alot of stuff coming with this bike. I had to rewire all the electricity fix the lighting, plugs, brakes...
And as time goes i just find more things to do :) The bike apparently been in bad condition and
the test i ran in the garage didn't found it all. Now its wont start properly, but ill deal with that.

Hi guys,
Oil leak now doesn't bother me coz i cant start the engine :(

I can start it by riding on the bike down hill though
It starts ok when the engine is hot but in the morning its just cant ignite.

I replaced plugs for new ones, voltage seems fine and i hear it trying to ignite. fuel supply is alright... Im clueless.  :dunno_white:
Any help?

Greetings and Happy 2007 to you!

If I read your previous post correctly, this sounds like it was a project bike. With any repairs, it never hurts to recheck previous work just to be sure something didn't change.

When you say:
Quote...i hear it trying to ignite. fuel supply is alright
what do you mean?  I cannot hear any spark activity on my GS when it starts.
Are you hearing a "click, click, click" type sound?

If so, you are probably hearing the starter relay dropping in and out. This and the fact that you can get it to start by pushing seems to imply a low battery condition. I would check the fluid level of the battery. If OK, try to use another battery to jump-start the GS and run it for a while at over 5k rpm to recharge the battery.

There are several threads regarding battery issues. Here's a link to the FAQ on one battery thread CLICK HERE  Let us know your progress.

I do have manual recharger for 12V ill try to recharge it that way.

The differences between the 93 are very few. We have at least one other member from Israel....I cannot remember his screen name though. Maybe one of the moderators will remember.

Take a look at my website (find it in my profile) for many pictures of my 90 GS project. Maybe something there will be of help also.

I just had a thought....who did you buy this GS from? Maybe it was the member I am trying to remember!!!

When the engine is hot, at what rpm does it idle?

It sounds like the idle screw (search "idle screw picture") needs to be adjusted.

If i'm right its just in the middle bottom, i tried to adjust it, by your advice, nothing :(

Is it oil, or is it gas?

With your idle going up to 5-6k rpm's, I suspect an air leak; most likely around the carb boots, make sure your carbs are seated.

I'm conjecturing, that the 'oil all over' is gas coming from between the carb boot and the carbs, as I have just seen this recently on another member's bike here.

Took it to a garage to fix it out. They popup a list of 900$ (in our currency) just to make it run, about 1/2 of the bike cost.
Anyone has an engine for sale

Some photos from dismantled top engine:

compression at 143(have no idea what units)

compression below 100

They told me i need to engrave this part since some compression escaping from scratches on this "tube".
