I bought 40 pilots for my gs and when I got home to look at the ones in the bike they were slightly different. The 37.5s that were in the bike did not have little holes in the side and the ones i bought did. Does this matter? what is the difference?

Yep, it matters. The cross drilled ones won't work in the GS.

Yep, the cross-drilled ones are whaaay too rich.

OK that's what I have been told by a lot of people...My trial and error with them...seem to have the opposite experience...37.5 drilled and non drilled seem to work identically... Yea it may be just a bit richer and at 37.5 it may act like a 40 which the bike likes and works fine with but put in 40 and that makes it act like 42.5 which is too rich...of course that may be the case but I dont know that. So Start with 37/5 bleeds and see what it does...do 1 change at a time and test thoroughly under many different conditions.
Cool.

"Bleeds" are the ones with holes?

Bleed is holed on sides...Non bleed is no side holes...

Yes, bleeder-type means that it has the holes. I've tried the 37.5 bleeder-types and still found it whay (i got used to the spelling) too rich, maybe every bike is a little different...srinath, you (or your freind) have had success with the bleeder types, it could be in combination with float level...
Mine was set high in both cases and I left them when I finally installed the 40 non-bleeds. Stock '94, foam filter in the stock airbox, stock pipe, stock petcock, pulled brass plugs, 2 1/2 turns out.

High float is a problem in itself...In any case you need to jet it to the float level...change it and you are going to have to jet all over again...sorta...More like say you are rich everywhere except on top ~3/4 throttle and higher...You lower the float to fix it and put in bigger mains to take care of the problem you have created. BTW the top of bowl and no more is the stock level said in terms of external measurements. I have the floats set 5 mm higher on my virago I think and it seems to have taken care of it quite well...In short you have to figure out where the manufacturer screwed you for the EPA and fix that...on the GS I believe its the pilot jet and main jet both of which are 1 size small compared to Canada. On the virago...well I didn't read its manual that well and it covers only US bikes I think but the float thing was needed if I didn't want to spend an eternity trying every jet.

After all my frustration and setbacks on locating the correct pilot jets you will be the first beneficiary of my "fruits and labor."

Do not order through the Mikuni parts catalog because I've tried unsuccesfully :nono:

Go to your local suzuki dealer and have them order from their Suzuki genuine parts catalog part no. 09492-40014    (contains only 1 Mikuni #40 non-bleeder pilot jet, so you'll need to order two). I originally got this part no. from Pantablo's website http://pantablo500.tripod.com/pablosgs500page/id7.html but I think this is a typo because it does not exist in the Suzuki parts catalog.

Trust me on this because I am looking right at them :thumb:

Thanks for catching that! I must rely on the accuracy of the contributors since I haven't done this work myself. Once someone in this thread can confirm the numbers (or I'll take Flash's word for it) I'll update my site to the correct numbers.  Thanks again Flash.
