License Plate Question

I got my bike running the other day, and took it on the interstate to do a few high speed runs... and somehow blew my license plate off, along with the bracket that holds it to the fender, and the LEDs I had that glow onto it. Oops. laugh

I'm not sure what to do about it... The tag was a FL tag, and I have FL insurance through progressive. I can't get a GA tag until I get GA insurance. I can't afford to get a new insurance policy right now, so I have to keep the FL policy (It's paid through July of this year). I know if I cancel the policy, Progressive will prorate it and give me a partial refund. But then I'd have to take the refund and put it towards a new policy, and I can't pay the difference. So I have to keep the FL insurance right now, which means I need another FL tag. To get a FL replacement tag, I have to fill out a form, pay the tag fee again, and have someone bring both in to the local tax collector's office down there. I can have a friend do that for me, but I can't afford to pay the fees right now. I HAVE to have the bike to get to/from the job I'm hoping to have in the next few days. Once I get the job, I can obviously afford to pay for the new tag. I still obviously have my registration which shows that I paid for a tag, and it's valid until may of this year. So is there any way I can get away with riding without that tag until I can afford a new one? Can I make a temp tag out of marker/cardboard and mount it, or something?

Thanks guys.

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

Send the registration to someone in Florida and tell them get a new plate for you.  Worst case scenario, you'll have to put them on your insurace for a day, or fill out a limited power of attorney.  Either way, you don't stand to loose too much money.  The shipping of the papers and the plate will cost more than anything.  My plate flew off on the highway a couple of months ago.  A new plate cost me $6.30, and my dealer gave me the bracket for 5 dollars.

$6.30? Crap, the Florida tag costs like $50.

You don't have to re-register your bike.  You just have to buy a new plate.  Bike plates should be cheap.

hm...

Here in MA, the inspection and registration stickers are located on the plate.  If I had to get a new plate for a bike, I'd have to pay to have it inspected again as well as get it registered.

Well, FL doesn't have inspections, but you're right, the registration is on the plate. I dunno if I could get a dupe without paying for it.. we'll see.

if you have progressive can you not just have it changed to that states polices ?  you have them it should not be that big of a deal . progessive is a big big company  i have them here in texas ....

NiceGuysFinishLast

Yeah, I can have em change states.. for an extra $100 a year. As it is, I'd like to keep the bike registered in FL.. I pay $193 a year... If I have them change it to GA, I pay $288 a year. I'll eventually switch it over to GA to be in the right with the law. But for now, I can't afford it.

Get a police report saying it was stolen.  Make a sign and put it on the back of your bike plate stolen.  You can ride around and you will probally get pulled over but as long as you have the police report you won't get a ticket.

I'm in downtown atlanta, I live on GaTech campus. But I'm always up for a ride. I head up to 180 in dahlonega a good bit. Once I get the bike finished, we'll have to ride. Are either of you guys members of Georgiasportbike.com or blokessportbike.com?

I appreciate it, but I believe to get the dupe, the paperwork has to go to the local tax collector's office. So unless you're from Naples, you'd be in the wrong county. Thanks though!
