wrecked bike reporting to insurance

Man I haven't been on here in a long time since I wrecked the bike.  Well here is my dilemma.  I originally wrecked the bike shortly after thanksgiving but I didn't report it then.  I waited to see if I could try and get it fixed myself but decided to report it to insurance today and stated that the accident happened yesterday.  I'm just wondering can it become an issue since I waited so long to report it?  I know when you have accidents you are suppose to report it as soon as you can but there was no police report.  I am just wondering if any issues can arise from this such as insurance fraud or anything similar since I waited so long.  The insurance has no proof of when the accident happened because there was no police report.

well, if there's documentation that you are defrauding the insurance company (like posting as such on a website...)...yeah, its clearly fraud.

But, speaking hypothetically, if one were to have an accident months ago, where no other vehicle was involved, no witnesses, etc and it wasnt reported for some time...I would wager it would work. hypothetically.

What ... no police report ... they prolly wont pay you anyway. You are thinking of a collision type claim right. Under some amount (usually equal to your deductible or less) they may take without a police report, but you're paying for it from your deductible. Then they'd bump your insurance cos you're accident prone.
I'd say ... you're screwed. Fix it yourself, or pay someone to fix it. Or sell it and buy a good one, or sell it and quit riding. Reporting it now will cause your car insurance to go up too.
Cool.

So the insurance will only pay for it if there is a police report?  Because a few years ago I got into an automobile accident but we both exchanged information and went our seperate ways without calling the police.  The insurance company covered this without needing a police report.  Did the insurance company only do this because it was a collision accident and in a regular car? I never got a police report in this motorcycle accident because luckily the first person on the scene rides also and he helped me by taking it in his truck.  I knew if the police showed up it wouldn't have been good because I was driving carelessly.  So there will be no compensation from the insurance company because it is a motorcycle and it was not caused by another motorist?  I had full coverage on the bike and am hoping to get some money for it cause it is still on lien and I owe 2400.  I just hope to get some money to help pay it off and then try and part it out.

no you dont have to have a police report .. or you should not have to .  family member of mine trashed his . they cut him a check to get it fixed . down side .. your insurnce will go up . and you will have to pay your part of the deductable . what all is messed up on it?

beams027

Yeah I am hoping that they cut me a check and I can pay the bike off.  Then I can take it off my insurance and use that money that I would have to use to pay the insurance off to pay the rest of the bike off.  My rates on insurance will go up but I won't be paying a ton of money that I would have to pay in order to keep the bike on the insurance.  The only problem with this is that I have to pay this money but don't get to have the fun of riding the bike.     Lesson learned-  wrecking a bike that is on lien is not only dangerous for your health but big time for your wallet.  I think that will be the last new bike I will ever buy.  Did your buddy report it right away or hold off?

Well on the bike I bent the forks, blew the tire and cracked the rim.

poolshark

Mmm... bent forks and a busted rim; there's a significant chance there's frame damage if the forks are bent. I'd say it's totaled... just something to keep in mind.

Flame on!

If your bike is not paid off yet, you might not be able to cancel your insurance policy.  Check with someone about that first.

If you need a front rim, I've got one for $50 shipped.

With it being possibly totalled would there be a better chance of the insurance cutting me check for the bike?  If they do cut a check how do they determine how much the check should be for?

So until I pay off the lien I must keep the bike under my insurance even if the bike is totalled or can't be driven?  Well if insurance cuts me a check and it is enough to cover the majority of the lien then I can make up the difference.  I am just wondering how they determine the amount?

annguyen1981

The insurance company will give you what's called the ACV (Actual Cash Value).

I forgot how this amount is determined.

If and when the insurance company declares the bike totaled, they take possession of the bike and cut you a check (minus the deductable).  At this point, since you do not own the bike anymore, you can cancel the insurance, but you still owe the bank.

So that is good news then cause if I had to leave the bike on the insurance even after it is totaled then that would be a killer for my wallet.  Thanks for that ACV thing cause I am going to google it.  Google is amazing.  I just hoping with this ACV that I can have enough that I can cover the lien difference.  I have good driver rates on my insurance right now and am still paying roughly 1300 a year for my car.  So if I get rid of the bike from the insurance and I am hypothetically saying they will probably give me a check for roughly 1500 then I can only imagine that the insurance wouldn't go up too much.  Last new bike I will ever own.  Good thing I went for the gs500f instead of getting the gsxr600.

If frame isn't busted, its an easy fix. What they'd want a report for varies state to state. On my accident (parking lot one where someone in a SUV backed into it) the cops came cos her insurance company told her to get the cops there. My insurance company (which happened to be the same as hers) told me that If I was claiming from mine it was not needed to have cops ... I said nope, I dont want to touch mine. somehow I can claim from mine even though its her fault and I didn't ahve comp or collision. I didn't care if it took longer ... I said nope I dont want to touch mine.
Anyway, state to state I think.

dont expect that much of your insurance premium to come back to you. its not figured in a common sense kind of way. you'll get screwed out of some of it-if you're going to make plans based on those numerical assumptions you'd better find out EXACTLY what they'll give you back if you cancelled the policy.

Also, they will lowball you on the actual cash value-they'll use the kellly blue book and offer you the lowest of the range. Then you'll have to fight with them, and end up settling for not quite what you thought it was worth. In the end, you might not get enough from the insurance to pay off the bike in full, depending on how good/bad your financing was.

Hey there,

If you decide to fix it yourself, let us know.
I have a set of forks that are straight but have surface imperfections on one of the fork tubes that causes it to leak every year. I used to drain and refill the fork oil every year to keep up with it, but if you need straight, cheap and complete fork legs that need some TLC, I'd sell them for $75 plus shipping.
Let me know,
Thanks,
