what does it mean when i start the bike with the choke on the rpms will go up and down. when the bike is warm i turn the choke off and the bike is fine mind you the bike was sitting for about four months without being ran oh yeah it sat outside . what could it be?

Uhhh ... Old gas, clogged jets, dried O rings, stuck floats, blocked fuel passages, closed tank vent, water in fuel system, corrosion in electrical system, dirty air filter, filthy oil, valves going tight ...
I'd just ride it, 99% of these can be fixed by riding ... I'd clean the air filter, change oil and filter and adjust the valves and heck put in new champions for good measure, check the air pressure in the tar's and ride.

yeah, what the man said.  Just ride it, a little fluctuation isn't abnormal.  Mine doesn't do it but mines an '05.  My dads old ford did it when choked, guess it didn't like to be choked...

What happens if you only use partial choke?

Start at full choke and bump it down a little, wait, bump it down a little more, and so on, and see where it stabilizes.

sounds good i rode the bike and it rode good for awhile but then when i came to one stop the rpms stayed at 6000 and didnt go down till i got home i turned the idle speed down and it fixed it but then it started to backfire what the heck is up. if thats normal for a bike that has sat for 4 months i guess ill just ride it out.

the petcock was on prime does that have anything to do with it?
