I have used a PC most of my life but my dad sent me an old g3 ibook with a new battery in it to take it to school. I really like it so far because it has a crazy 5 hour battery life vs. my sony laptop that has 2 batteries to get to 4 hours and runs loud if you leave it on. anyway im taking an online math class and im running into a small problem on the mac

The MathXL Player requires Windows/Internet Explorer. Please close this browser and use Internet Explorer 6.0 to log in to your course again to install and run the MathXL Player.

are there any ways to get this to work on my mac because IE was cancelled for the OS X operating system I can switch back to the PC to do the online work but it would be cool to use this mac.

Some quick googling says that MathXL Player requires ActiveX controls (bleh!). Basically this means there's no way to run it on a Mac. On a newer Mac you could run Windows in a virtual machine (like Parallels), but the G3 iBook is too old and slow for any of those virtual machines.

Use the Windows laptop for your math course, then spend the rest of the time enjoying your Mac.

maybe if you boost up the ram you could get away with an older version of virtual PC. I. www.apple.com they have a free download section with other browsers or try and do a search to find a browser that uses ACTIVE X controls .

congrats on the mac , once you go mac PC just plain sux! lol.

thats my advise for a fellow mac user. you can also go to any apple store and ask them for help with this issue they can most likely guide you in the right direction.

Totally!  The problem is that I expected iLife software to work.   

I've crashed every one of 'em...  And it's always when I'm doing complecated stuff like launching the app, saving, or doing something...

iMovie, iDVD, GarageBand, the crappy web page thingy...  All have this Crash-O-Matic function when I try to use them...  I just learned to Apple+S every time I click anything, think about anything, move the mouse, etc.   

you can run windows on that mac if you get an older version of virtual PC.  We have many g3 and g4 macs running OS X 10.3 with virtual PC, its slow as balls but it would work. 

If the battery life on your regular Windows laptop is a concern, you can get a bigger capacity battery.  Normally, the batteries are 6-cell batteries.  You can get a 12 cell and get more time.

ive never had a g4 or above mac crash on me ever! PC crashes everytime I use them just about lol.  its really not the pC but more so windows OS , linux and unix work fine on my PC. I own both.

Then I'm guessing you guys don't use iLife crap...  Either that or your Macs are fast enough to handle it.     My Powerbook is a 1.5 GHz with 512 RAM.      And I'm trying to use it to edit HD video...      And make 16 track recordings...

well I have a powerbook G4 677mhz with 1g RAM, I edit DV video on a regular basis, and Record my band on a regular basis. My computer has never skipped a beat , givin me a digital glitch or crashed.   how is your hard drive? I run everything out to a seperate Lacie Firewire Drive.  I have a powebook G4 Titanium and I use OSX 10.3.9 I am not upgrading anymore because I do not want to use widgets , as they take up to much RAM.  Also when you are editing video and recording do you close all other programs or do you load down the computers RAM with other programs? Your powerbook can handle More ram, I would suggest adding it. I bought this computer in late 2001 straight off the apple website. who knows whats going on with your comp, its rare to hear anything negative about a mac though.

Not really...when Mac's break...they really really break...when I worked as a comp tech at Yale 50% of the student body used macs. Broken macs were scary to deal with because they're usually pretty f%&ked..plus no one knows how to fix them..we get lots of practice with PC's

yea macs are rare to break.. well the I-books have been known to have a few problems but like you said most people dont know how to fix them. any of the MAC mags or the apple web site are good places to find good tech info on fixing things.

but I will say I have 3 PC's at home and all three have died , I cant get them to even boot up anymore im sick of dumping money into them once they died I said f%$k it ill just use 100% mac from now on lol.

I did 3 years of tech support at USC, so I've seen more than my fair share of broken machines on each side, and Macs get a bad rap because of this. Windows machines have a bajillion and one problems, so the relatively simple to fix problems make people think that Windows is easier to fix in genereal since they are a much larger percentage of the problems. On the other hand, I've found that most Mac problems only occur when the hardware goes bad, so people think they are more difficult to fix because it's usually a more extensive process. I guess Apple needs to start making their TCP/IP stack or hardware drivers go bad more often so that techs will think Macs are easier to fix.

have you tried Mozilla Firefox?  you should be able to select IE controls for plug-ins. this might work.

also, i used to run VPC on a G3 iMac and it was fine, even for AutoCAD.  should work OK for your purposes.

Oh for a more speedy VPC install get a metric butt ton of RAM.  This is likely why you are having problems with the iLife software Rvertigo.  Macs love to have a lot of RAM. 

Anyone ever cracked into one of the G3 clamshells to fix anything, they are possibly the most pain in the ass macs i have worked on so far

I'm wondering if something might be wrong with my HDD...  I get "HDD too slow" errors when I record sometimes...  I just thought it was because I didn't have enough RAM and it was disk-swaping to hell...   


If the RAM doesn't do it, then I dunno...  Maybe I'll just wait 5 more years until I can afford a G5 tower.
