I took my bike to the dealership yesterday to get the horn fixed, which they were supposed to do before i bought it.  Anyways all they did was order the part for it and i picked it up today.  As I'm driving home it starts idling between 4 and 5.  Any idea's on why this happened or if i should be overly worried about it.

Could be running lean... or a vaccuum problem. Check to make sure all the hoses are hooked up etc.. and make sure that no screws are missing from the top of the carb diaphragms or anything odd. Did they actually work on the bike? or did they just give you the horn and send you on your way?

I hate dealers... ill never get work done there... ever.

They didn't do any work on it, just ordered the parts for the horn.  I asked them to take a look at it because the shift lever sticks when it's in neutral and won't always go into first.  They looked at it and said it wasn't warranty work and i told them that I would take it somewhere else that woudn't charge me and arm and a leg for it.

Ok, first off, oil level has a huge bearing on your shifting. Be it too much or too little oil. Secondly, try rocking the bike forward a bit then shifting it down. The tranny is such that it doesnt always shift while sitting still. Thats perfectly normal and fine. Once you get into the habit of moving it a bit, youll get used to it. The trannys used on a lot of motorcycles are this way because they are constant mesh.

Can you give any more details about how its idling high? did you try turning the idle screw left? Its down between the carbs. Big knob, cant miss it :thumb:

They said there are some bent levers (probley from me dropping it), I'm going to take it to someone else to fix the shifting thing.  When i start it it idles around 1 then after driving it around the block a couple times it's at 2, i drove it for about 5 more min and it's idling at 3.  Then i turn it off come back 5 min later and it's idling at 4.  On my way home from the dealership (about 20 min of highway speed) it was idling at a solid 4.5

Did you buy the bike new or used?  When I bought my 97 used it had problems idling.  It turned out that the choke cable was seized up from rust or something.  Usually after it got good and warmed up the idle would go real high.  I bought a new choke cable, cut off the old one (since there was no way to move it to take it off) and installed the new one.  This solved the problem.  If you can't move the choke lever very far the cable may be seized.  If you can move it but it doesn't seem to effect the way the bike runs, the cable may be broken inside the sheath.  With nothing regulating the choke mechanism on the carbs the idle can go really wacky.

Good luck.

kristoni22, here is a picture that shows both the idle screw and the "business end" of the choke cable.  It was taken from the right side of the bike:

The idle screw is in the lower center.  It's the goldish knurled knob on the end of a long shaft.  Turn it one way to increase the RPMs at idle, and the other way to decrease.  This can be done while sitting on the bike, once your hand gets used to finding it.  You can even adjust it while going down the road (with the clutch lever pulled in, and assuming you're wearing gloves).

The end of the choke cable is in the upper center of the photo, surrounded by a spring.  Thet spring helps the cable to return to its "OFF" position when you push the choke lever forward at the handlebar.  Check for smooth operation while the bike is parked and OFF.  You may need to lube the cable if it's sticking in the ON position.

Here is another, possibly less-intimidating photo of the idle screw, taken from the LEFT side of the bike:

Not idle screw...its got lean mix at idle...Mechanically challnged girl...well we dont cut any slack for the equally challenged guys around here so we wont in your case either...(we are equal opportunity jerks...) You can take it to a shop if you wish...but the problem isn't going to get fixed...Atleast ask them to remove the caps on the mix screws...than we can set them ourselves/yourself. Also if it started doing this abruptly...check if all the hoses form the airbox are intact and non ripped. Mix screw can be set from say 1 turn out to ~5 turns out only and if that is not enough ( I dont think it will be) then you need 40 pilots.

So my question is why do you start thie topic with the term "stupid dealership"?

A: Is it because they forgot to order or fix your horn?

B: Is it because your bike is idling high?

Also on another post you state:

So my question here are as follow:

Is the bike under warranty?

What did you gain by telling them  you "would take it somewhere else that woudn't charge me and arm and a leg for it?"

If you feel that it should be under warranty then write a nice letter to the manager to let them know where you stand and see if they can take care of you or maybe help you out since you did buy the bike from them.  Since I do not know who you talked to about the shifter or how you approached the dealer about the problem it is a hard call.

I work in retail and service ( bicycle business) and and know that it depends on who you talk to and how you come across as to how you will be treated in the end.

As for your comment about going somewhere else it could end up biting you in the butt in the end because in that depending on how big your city is and how many dealers there are in the city there is a good chance that somone at the dealer you got your bike from is good friends with someone at another dealer and if you came across as a pain in their butt then you could come up in conversation over a beer after work and become labeled as either a nice person to take are of  or a total pain the butt to walk away from.

I have had customers come in and tell me that my price for a bike at my shop was higher  by 10% or more than a local dealer that sells the same brand and because I know everyone in town that sells the same brand as I do I will call the other shop and ask them if that is true right in front of the customer.  Usually I find out that the customer was not quoted such a low price but they were trying to play me in hopes of me begging them to buy it from me after I gave them a great deal.

My point:  I hope you can get your bike fixed for free or at a good deal but remember it helps if you do not come across with a attitude that might not  be taken wrong by the dealer.
