DON'T DO IT...Vista is a resource hog, and you need a top of the line machine to run it nicely. Plus, it's buggy as hell, with horrible driver support. Wait a year or two... My $.02

vista sucks.  every machine I've used with it has sucked.  brand new machines shouldn't be bogged down all the time and slow.  as said, it's a tremendous resource hog...not that XP is much better...

Vista Office?  Like Word, Powerpoint, Excel, etc?  Or, do you mean the OS?

The answer to both is NO.  NO POINT...  Stay where you are!

+1 to all

NO! DONT :) I am a PC tech and I have made a TON of $$$ in the past two weeks on trouble shooting calls for new Dell owners who chose the Vista option .

Quick fix on most of those calls has been.... Re-install XP  :thumb: Hehe.. and I get $180 Ea.  from Dell to do it  :icon_mrgreen: So far I have (Down graded) 20-25 PC's in just about 2 weeks.. All Dells, all having problems w/ Vista  :icon_twisted:

DONT DO IT  :icon_mrgreen:

If you are NOT having issues with your current OS, there is no need to upgrade to anything.

I'm definitely not upgrading until they release at least the first service pack...or second..maybe third....

omg!  the problems with Vista are getting worse!  A friend of mine just bought a Vista-equiped PC and set it up.  It was running fine for about an hour then it ate Jake's dog!  He said after that the thing ran like shaZam!.

I'm not going to upgrade until I have to...

I'd still be running Win2K if all my software/hardware worked on it properly...   :dunno_white:

I don't care what my OS looks like...  I just want my software to be FAST and NOT crash.   :thumb:

So this raises another question too.  I'm looking for a cheaper laptop as a tertiary machine (after my kickass custom and my backup xps).  I'd look for used but can't really find much.  And all the new machines come with Vista now.  Most new machines in the range I'm looking at say Vista will work .. but I know it will still be buggy.

Any thoughts?  Looking for sub-$700 (actually sub $500 but that won't happen).

Look at acer. Not GREAT.. but cheap, and pretty durable, and I can almost guarantee they won't come with vista. Also, check overstock.com, they SOMETIMES have good deals... usually they're overpriced though..

Vista is also not compatable with many laptop wireless internet cards, such as Verizon Wireless'. Verizon also wont confirm any date of release for the software upgrade for the card.

That's just the broadband cards right?  Not the actual wireless to connect to a router?

Most of the Acer's I've seen come with Vista.  At least the CC systems.  I did find an HP that looked decent though.  I basically need a laptop that has onboard wireless, dvd burner, decent battery, and hopefully MCE (though that seems hard to find).  Oh - and at least a 15.4 screen - want to be able to see it :)

yea the wireless national broadband & Vista do not mix. i'm not sure about the wireless home/work routers.

Just built a new machine last week. Intel Core 2 Extreme, 8GB of RAM, 2x ATI X1950 Crossfire. Spared no expense with absolute top of the line parts all around. That's how I roll bitches! Anyway, originally installed Vista Ultimate, but I wiped the whole thing literally a couple of days ago and reinstalled XP Pro. It wasn't because of performance or anything like that. Vista ran very well, in fact. It was because of the very poor driver and service support. I'll probably jump back on Vista after the first SP, but for now, nothing beats XP Pro as far as Windows OSs go. :thumb:

If you're looking for a laptop to downgrade to XP stay away from the new HP laptops that are all glossy with quickplay keys and etc ( I can't remember their model number and am too lazy to lookup them up).  The new hardware in the machine will not work with xp installs discs since they requre special drivers.  I work at a teech support company for our college and we had to create a custom XP install disc by slipstreaming some of our own drivers onto the iso and modifying the xp install process to install them.
