Five minutes from home too - always the way.

The lights were green so I was slowing, but still cutting along at 60ks up the inside.  Then my headlight picked up the oil.  I hit a 4-5m long patch left behind from a car accident, apparently only moments before I rolled up - traffic control were still on the way (impeccable timing).  I thought, "Oh crap - this is gonna sting", laid off the brakes, and a second later the bike began to pivot like I'd ridden straight onto an ice rink.  Had a moment where I thought I might have saved it, but the moment I tried to turn into the corner, the front slipped out and down I went.

Got the bike back up, but I was dripping oil from somewhere.  Considering the amount of oil, not only on the road, but all over me and the bike, I thought it best to shut her down and get a tow.  A lady who had stopped happened to be a club member and handed me her phone, and Ghost Riders turned up 10 mins later.

Now, to the point - there is one - just wondering what to start looking for.  There is no significant external damage - surprisingly little in fact - just the engine block has had a good scrape on the right side.  I've noticed some entries saying a drop will probably result with oil overflowing into the airbox, and out the vent tube, especially if the oil level is high (she's fresh back from service).  I still have plenty oil when checked, and she's turning over happily this morning, but as the engine started to warm oil began drip from the bottom of the engine.  I'm hoping this is just cold oil, and no, I haven't washed all the oil off yet (I'm still a little stiff!), but hoping someone has maybe had a similar experience to put my mind at ease.  Am I looking at a potential cracked case, or are the GS's really that strong?

If your oil level is fine, then you probally picked up a bunch of oil from the road and some probally came out the breather.

I'd just wash all the oil off and clean the oil out of the airbox. Make sure you're up to the full mark on your dipstick then fire it up. There will probally be some smoke for a minute as the oil that got in the airbox is burned, and the oil burns off the exhaust. Let the bike run for a couple of minutes on its centerstand and watch for leaks. If you don't see any leaks and the smoke stops after a minute or two, you're fine.

Don't forget to check out everything else. Bent forks, broken fork brace, spilled battery, bent handlebars, etc.

Glad you aren't hurt too bad at least. Did you file a police report? I'm no legal expert but if an earlier accident caused the oil spill that caused your accident, whoever caused that spill could be found at fault and may have to pay for the dammage to your bike. You shoud at least look into it.
Good luck

Thanks mate - the knee's a bit swollen from copping a knock, and lost a bit of skin from friction, but otherwise I'm fine.

Thanks for the re-assuring words too.  I'll give her a good clean in the morning and get all the oil off the engine and out of the airbox.  I'll post my results when I'm done.

Oh yeah - I did speak to the traffic guys, and apparently here in Oz the rules are much the same.  Unfortunately the tow-truck took off before the traffic guys turned up, so I've got no-one to ping it on.  They did promise to give witness should I need to claim on my insurance.  We'll see what happens.
