I have a '99 with a K&N pod filter, that replaces the entire airbox, rejetted with 132.5 mains, 40 pilots, and 3.5 turns out.  When starting out the bike has very little power at all below 2000 rpm and stutters until it reaches 2000 rpm where the power begins to build.   I think the low end power loss is probably due to the removal of the airbox, but when the idle screws were farther in, there wasn't any hesitation below 2000 rpm.  If you were idling and you blipped the throttle, it would sail up past 2000 rpm and hang at like 4000.   I figured this was a lean situation at idle so I turned the screws out.  Now, it still hangs but it kind of stutters below 2000 rpm.  The hanging gets worse if I raise the idle before the engine is fully warmed up.  Is it rich or lean at idle?  Any information would be of help thanks.

You have a pipe or slip on as well?? How is the power after 2K??
It could be rich at idle and lean immediately after...it still hangs at 4K when blipped...but now there is more hesitation...You could be rich...try to go back to the previous setting...

I have the stock pipe on.  Once the rpms get above 2000 the power builds and it pulls hard to redline.  It feels like the main is still a touch to large.  Should I turn the idle air screw in, to lean out the idle mixture?  If I do that though, how do I to get rid of the hanging?

JasonB was using 140's with stock pipe and K&N pod. May be lean...No idea really cos I never had stock pipe on any bike.

I run 140 mains 40 pilots and 2 washers under the needle. Stock pipe and pod filter. Also 2.5 turns out on the mixture screw. At idle it seems to load up if I let it sit and idle at say a long red light or when warming it up. I just get into the habit of twisting the throttle a couple times before I take off otherwise it kinda stumbles around 2k and generally falls on its face. Screw in and its way lean and the idle hangs, screws farther out and the stumble is even worse even when blipping the throttle.

I dunno how to get that loading up and stumble out of the bike so I have lived with it until I get my new pipe and will get to play with the mains and mixture screws again.

Do you have any washers under the needles? And the jets your using are OEM Mikuni not a Factory kit or K&N right?

No I haven't looked at the plugs I should probably do that.  I forgot to mention that I have 2 needles under the washer.  I guess I'll let it idle a bit and then check the plugs and mess with the idle adjuster screw accordingly.  Thanks.

No prob, if you let it idle too long the plugs will look like the bike is rich from a too rich idle. You should take them out clean them up a bit them go ride it pretty hard around the block and bring it home and try not to let it idle long before you turn if off. Racing way is to make a pass down the strip and turn it off at the end then push it back to check plugs but kinda hard to do on the street.

Actually right now I am in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan.  I list detroit because I am also in Howell and Mt. Clemens.  So I am around the area.
