WELCOME!  :thumb:

run a search & all the little details will come up.

you can:

1) ditch the farings & mount the clipons below the top triple. You'll need a new headlight & turn signal mount. Also the brake line will be obnoxiously long. You can keep the top triple plate which the guages mount onto. This is what I did. Sell the plastics on ebay & get money for the other stuff.

2) keep the farings, but ditch the top triple plate. You'll need to drop the forks a bit to get the clipons to fit ABOVE the top triple. You'll also need to figure out a way to mount the guages. Another member named Airbrush did this. He made his own (really thin) cover to put between the top triple & clipons. He mounted the guages to this as well. Wierd thing was, even when asked directly, he wouldnt talk about mounting the guages. I'm guessing because while riding they were vibrating like CRAZY.

3) pay big money & get a set of raised clipons to place BELOW the top triple, which should clear the farings. Keep everything stock but pay roughly $200. I'm not sure how much of a rise you'll need. Maybe 2 inches??

4) keep an eye out for a set of US '89 model clipons, which mounted directly to the top plate along with the guages. NGFL said he had to bend the bars to keep them from hitting the tank at lock. You could be searching a LONG time for some of these.

NiceGuysFinishLast

Everything l3uddha said is correct. I have '89 clipons on mine and love 'em. However, they had to be bent out to avoid hitting the tank, but I think they'd work with the fairings on your F. Your other options are SM2 bars for about $150 (I think).. they replicate the clipon feel, but they mount using the stock hardware. They're the easiest option.

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

Dont remember Buddha asking me directly about questions about my clipons. Here is the post i answered buddha on, no mention of this:

No...there is no crazy vibration. Its no different than stock, its still mounted using rubber bushings underneath and rubber washers on top. I just used 1/8th inch aluminum plate, made a template out of card stock and cut it out, mount it, gauge clusters still mount securely.

Airbrush, since you maybe the only one who's done this....you raised your forks to mount the clips correct? What did that do to the handling of the bike?

...if you remove the stock handlebar mount you'll have lots of room to put your clips ons....will only require you to move your fork tubes up about a half inch or so...not enough to effect the handling what so ever.

...the gauges will mount to the aluminum plate you make to cover the ugly triple underneath the stock handlebar clamp. Just make a template out of card stock and pick up some 1/8 inch aluminum sheet and cut it out.

Maybe I'm just confused. In your very first link, you made no mention of remounting the guages.

the top link (above) you say: "I would suggest doing it as I mentioned before, removing the stock handlebar mount, that way you dont have to move the forks very much. I just made an aluminum plate with carbon fibre to cover over the ugly triple...simply cosmetic, you dont have to do it if you don't want."

in the lower link (above) you say: "this post shows my clipons...just removed the stock handlebar mounting plate...you dont have to touch the gauges...i just made a plate to cover up the ugly triple clamp."

You didnt reply to my direct question about it in the top link (above), so I sent you a PM. You didnt answer the question there either; just gave me links to the threads I had already seen...

anyways, sorry for being confused. thanks for finally clearing that up!

airbrush

if you look at the bike its very obvious that the gauges mount to the stock handlebar clamp. If you plan on removing the stock clamp, so that you dont have to move the fork tubes much, then the gauges would mount to that plate.
Of course you can mount clip ons without removing the stock clamp..but this would mean moving the fork tubes up much more and possibly affected handling etc.

Every GS5 sold here in the UK had clip-ons fitted as standard and the breakers are full of them. Why not find and e-mail a few breakers over here, agree on a price for a set and get them sent over via UPS or DHL.

airbrush

any 37mm will work. There are lots of companies that make clipons, just start searchin. Pro-flo is one i was looking at getting before I snagged a set off of ebay.
