EAST coast-who has kerry's valve adjusting kit?

reminor - my issue is the math.  A wiki  with the calculations would be a help for anyone doing a valve adjustment.

I came up with the following:

QuoteRH intake    = @ .127mm  (shim=2.45mm)

Total distance between cam and bucket = 0.127mm + 2.45mm = 2.577mm

Total distance minus mid tolerance = 2.577mm - 0.060mm = 2.517mm

I would need a shim of 2.50mm to reach a clearance of 0.06mm

I also tried subtracting the mid-tolerance from the current clearance = 0.127mm - 0.060mm = 0.067mm

then adding that to the current shim = 0.067mm + 2.45mm = 2.517mm

again concluding that I would need a shim of 2.50mm to reach a clearance of 0.06mm

I am not sure if it is correct, I am hoping to see if the Geniuses on this board agree with me.

If I am correct I suggest we add this to the wiki in some form or another, for future reference.

I am good with math, but even this threw me for a loop.

QuoteWiki's your friend on a lot of GS questions. Here's one for valves I created - http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Maintenance/CheckValves. There I've also added a link to a place selling shims for cheap.
Good luck! Hurry up boys, Spring's around the corner!

nicely done!

Whats up with the kit? Who's got it and who's next on the list? Its March, spring time is almost here!

Scratch me off that list.  I have my own kit now and when I am through with it I will be sending it out as a third floating kit.

yikes!  6th in line!  aren't there 2 kits floating around?

baco99

any word on the second kit?  all i need is the special tool and the micrometer.

do i really need the special tool?

3imo

you don't "need" the tool, but you will wish you had it.   It is possible to push the drum down with a screw driver and use a magnet to get the shim, but you need a third hand to pry the shim loose before the magnet can grab it.

I've done it once or twice without the tool, but afterwards I had a freind help me.  If you got a buddy to help you will have an easier go at it.

About the micrometer, I just took my shims to the auto parts store and used their micrometer right off the shelf.

My shims were still the size they were marked as, and I didnt have to buy the micrometer.  :thumb:

my buddy is 7 months pregnant and probably not willing to help.  LOL!

i think i saw the tool on eBay for $15.  might just pick one up and start a 3rd kit.

baco99

ordered another tool plus a bunch of misc parts for the job.

new head gasket, new o-rings, new breather filter, new exhaust head bolts (mine are all mismatched and don't tighten right), new fork washer and retaining clips, oil filter and gasket.

anywhere i can get inexpensive bar end balancers?  the OEM ones are like $20 each!

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

baco99

you can take me off.  i have my own tool and caliper now.  just need the sleeve of gauges and the shims themselves.

Onlypastrana199

I've got the kit (man is it in rough shape!) I'll try and fix it up a bit, gotta get AJ's bike apart and we'll get it back out ASAP.

This will go out likely Saturday if not Monday, Sicarli, PM with an address if you still need the kit. If not, next person down!

Is this free to use? If so I could use it. I just got my 1994 GS500 with 2500miles and I'd like to check the valves to make sure everythings good. So when everyone else is done with it could someone send it my way?

EdChen

I'll be needing to check my valves again sometime soon.  Anyone else in the Chicagoland area want to meet up and do it sometime this summer?  I'll be gone from mid June to mid August, but I'll be around anytime that's not then.  I've never done it myself still, so any support would be incredible.  Thanks!

Edward
