Hi

I have a 1998 GS500E and I need to replace it's engine. I bought a 2005 engine in Ebay and it's on the way. I've got the engine's serial number from the seller and the prefix is M504. My engine's prefix is M501.
Does anyone know if there are changes that will prevent the replacing?
Why the prefix was changed? In http://www.cyclechaos.com/wiki/Suzuki_GS500E there is a spec. list of GS 500 in the years 1989 - 2001. In all of them the prefix is M501.

The tachometer drive is electronic on the '05's.  The wiring harness, or connectors, may be different.
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

Thanks.

So, if I'll add an external oil coller and replace the tachometer by an electronic one it will fit?

dgyver

You will need the ignition box as well. Which then you probably will need a 04+ wire harness unless you can modify your harness as there are some differences in wires and connectors. The 04+ only have 1 ignition pickup, 89-02 have 2. You may be able to use the rotor and ignition plate from your motor.

You should be able to use your mechanical tach. The 04+ still have the hole in the head for the connection but it is has a removable plug. The drive unit is not there. I am not sure if the exhaust cam has the worm gear cut in it for the drive. If it does, pull the unit for your old motor.

If you want to use an electronic tach, you can use your stock harness but you will need to add a wire for the signal from the black/yellow at the right coil to the tach. You may need to add a power and ground for the tach as well.
Common sense in not very common.

Thinking about it, the GS did just fine without the oil cooler for a decade before they put fairings on to block the airflow to an air-cooled engine. If you're going to stay naked, you'd probably be fine just short-circuiting the oil cooler circuit with some combination of hose and tubing. It would be a heck of a lot easier than welding mounting tabs on the frame, locating a spare cooler, re-locating the horn, etc. etc.

Yes, I talked today to the mechanic that will replace my engine and he said the same thing. The GS can do without the oil cooler. He also said that all other issues are easy to fix.
My only problem now is to get an import permit from our Ministry of Transport. They want me to provid a document that explains what are the differences between the M501 and the M504 engines. I hope I will get it from the local Suzuki importer. I asked them but they are not so cooperatively. In the global Suzuki site there is no way to ask them or write to them.
Anyway, I believe that every thing will be OK eventually.
