I've got a gixxer front end coming in tommorow that came off of a GS, so it's already modified.  It's triples, stem, wheel, clip-ons, controls all that crap.  Is there anything I need to know when I change this thing out and is it something I should be able to do tommorow afternoon or should I wait til the weekend????     Thanks you guys!!!!!  ( I'd rather do it tommorow afternoon,  local club has a fun ride Sat morning. )

spc

GADAMMIT!!!!!! RESPECT MY AUTHORITA!!!!!!!  seriously I see people are looking at this.........someone has to have an answer  ( yes I'm impatient! )

scottpA_GS

Have you got enough beer in the fridge to do a job of this difficulty?

Have got a full box of band aids handy?
The more I learn about women, the more I love my bike.

Yeah everything is included calipers rotors braided steel line and all the controls.  Yeah I wen't out and bought a 36 pack of the St. Patricks day Bud Light aluminum bottles.....so I should be good on beer   :dunno_white:  As far as bandaids yeah I'm pretty stocked,  I have an odd propensity for hurting myself

If you are this impatient (11 minutes) for someone to answer your question, you are going to have a heck of a time doing this swap.

Without knowing exactly what other crap you are getting and what year/model Gix the forks are from.....

You will need to...
modify the steering stop
drill out the security bolts for the ignition switch

If it does not already have these...
buy/make brackets for the headlight
buy/make bracket for the gauges

There probably will be other things that need to be modded, tweaked or adjusted. Do not expect this to be a quick swap.

Common sense in not very common.

spc

Even with it already having been fitted on a GS  I know about headlight brackets ( I've got a less than DOT standard idea for that) and I dont run gauges right now, they got in the way  :dunno_white:  that and the speedo got smashed to bits when a truck cut me off

ducati_nolan

If you don't care about gauges or headlights and just want the bare minimum to make it go then it shouldn't take too long. If it was already on a GS, then the stem itself should bolt up very quickly. You could hang the mess of wiring that used to reside in your headlight bucket onto the tripples or fork leg uppers with some duct tape. Then take a small die grinder to your steering stops if needed.

Next you would need to bolt on your clutch lever (should be a very simple bolt on and go) then bolt on your master cylinder to the clip on and then hook up your throttle cables. The throttle cables may be the biggest pain in the ass because you may not be able to use your throttle sleeve with the GSXR master cylinder. The guy ywho has it on his GS had something figured out though. You also need to wire up the starter button (should be simple)

Go get a $20 set of driving lights to keep the cops from hasling you (and foe when it gets dark) and you'll be riding, at least untill the zip ties slip or something. If you don't need your bike to get to work, start now and you could have it done by the weekend. If you need your bike to get to work, wait 'till the weekend.
good luck it should be awesome  don't get too drunk and fuk it up

spc

He said all the controls have already been worked for the GS....... that I'd just have to plug n play with the cables and wires.  As far as the driving lights  that's what I was thinking, cops round these parts are pretty laid back, I was thinking about the lights with the blue LED halo just because.  Not work just school.  And if I have to I can borrow a car to get there.  Theoretically though, barring that case of beer miraculously emptying into my stomach  :icon_mrgreen: while I'm doin this,  how long should this take, can I pull it off in a night if I start when I get out of class at 6???
And don't get drunk during the week, I discovered that's a good way to fail classes  :dunno_white:

spc

Went back and checked the pics....looks like all the electricals are already worked outside of the connecters theres a few loose wires I assume are for the headlight

sledge

Terry?
I have a "Serious Question" for you. How do you realisticaly expect anyone in here to be able to say how long it will take you to do the job? No-one knows what facilities you have, how competant and what your abilities are. Furthermore no-one has a crystal-ball and be able to say you wont have problems. Its an involved job and it will take as long as it takes, if you bodge it, it will come back and bite your arse, if you rush it you are likely to fu** up big time.
If you want serious answers ask serious questions, otherwise you will find after a while people will ignore you.

spc

CHILL OUT!!!  I guess i should have phrased it how long has this taken others to do.  I am fairly mechanically inclined and have a decent assortment of tools but I'm definitely not a bike shop mechanic.

Sledge: here's a quote they drilled into our heads during Infantry School ( That place that puts out the most skilled and competant ground fighting force on the face of the planet, just for clarification. )   " Life comes at you at 3x the speed of stupid, generally stupid is accompanied by his friend violent death,  all you need to do to outrun these two fuckers is chill out.   Panicking brings you  to a dead stop no matter how fast you think you're moving."  The moral of the f%$king story is Don't take anything to serious.  Trust me nothing in your life is so serious that you can't calm down and provide a rational response.  It's done all the time in combat,  you can do it too in your daily life.  The other thing they teach is that a healthy amount of cockiness is a very good thing, so pretty much f%$k off!!!!!! :flipoff:  pretty much your a duck and it doesn't really affect me  :icon_mrgreen:  Yeah I know Tard Farm Here I Come!!!!!!!!!  Ohh well  life goes on.........

spc

And if you're going to address me by partial title it's Specialist.  I don't know you.

sledge

Terry?
How many times are you going to mention the fact you were/are army? I think we all know now. Quite what all that bullshit means and what the connection is with forks I dont know. This is a owners forum not the marines, I struggle to work you soldier types out and then find myself wondering why I even bother to try.  I have a couple of ex army (REME) engineers working under me and they have a similar attitude as you. It can get a bit tiresome after a while considering we are in civvy-street now. A 10 minute "Chat" in my office usually brings them round. Anyway you carry on with your forks, I am sure a guy with all your training will have planned it to the last detail and wont have any problems.

spc

I'm not trying to start anything.  I am Army.   Societal Re-integration is always an issue with Army or Marine Corps personnel when they seperate, on some level, especially when you're talking about combat forces  ( Special Forces, Infantry, Combat Engineers).  I was just wanting to know about others experiences doing this and if there's anything in particular I need to pay attention to, since a failure in this area can be catastrophic.  I'm a Grunt it's the biggest part of my life and it shows everywhere I go.  I always will be a Grunt, it's a calling, I guess.  But, yes I admit that at times it's hard to let go of that when interacting outside of that environment:  Translates as- I'm sorry I didn't mean to be an ass,  I'm just a little tempermental at times.

sledge

Terry? I respect your comments and can understand them to a degree. I also had an ex-RAF engineer who saw action in the first gulf war, he worked with me for less than 6 months then had a nervous breakdown....and no it wasnt due to me.

If I had to make a few suggestions I would say above all else make sure the bike is properly supported when you take the forks off. Make notes before disconnecting any wiring, dont overtighten and pre-load the headrace bearings, make sure nothing fouls on full lock like cables etc and check the condition of the brake lines and fluid. I dont like to rush anything I do and would leave myself an easy day to do the swap, but at the same time I would expect some issues along the way.
If you have problems, someone in here will help you.

spc

Thanks, that's pretty much exactly what I was looking for.  Looks like I'll either be decommissioning her for a couple of days or just missing the ride and doing it saturday.  As far as the Engineer,  we're seeing a lot of that with 1st war vets over here. It's sad.  I had one in a CQC refresher course just break down crying in the middle of small arms disarmament.  Any Idea how tight everything should be torqued???

sledge

I am at work right now, I will check the manual when I get home and post the relevant figures later.

spc

That's fine thanks a lot.  It's gonna be a good 16 hrs before I actually even look at all this. get to go to class in 8 hrs.  and stay there for a while.  take it easy on your ex-mil guys.  we're a bunch of assholes and fucktards but given the proper motivation we can accomplish shaZam! incredibly fast and incredibly accurately.

I just had to put those two quotes together.  :flipoff: I'm glad to see that our beloved military guys are getting along so well now. :P

What about going on the ride on Saturday and then doing the forks on Sunday?  :icon_mrgreen:
