So a friend decided to add oil to his GS and massively overfilled it.  He called me over immediately since I tend to do my own service on my bikes.  I can do most anything up to a carb synch and balancing throttle bodies...but engine build work isn't something I'm set up to do, except maybe some minor top end work.

He read "online" that it takes four liters (ummm...nope!) and thinking he was bone dry added that amount.  Immediately he had performance issues so I helped him drain the oil and cleaned out the airbox and airbox drain hose.  What came out was approximately five liters of burnt smelling nastiness (not to mention the half liter in the airbox and hose)!

Well the bike seems to run fine except he is now getting massive amounts of blue smoke under acceleration.  This sounds like problems with his rings, but then again he could just be burning off the crud.  He says he wasn't getting any smoke before the oil change, but I think he might not have noticed since he ran it like this for maybe 50 miles at the most. 

So what do ya'll say...did he hose his rings?  I doubt this is a valve problem since he doesn't seem to have any smoke at idle or startup.  Running it on the center stand seems to minimize the smoke as well.  His oil levels were getting low despite a dealer performed oil change in December.  With the five liters that came out and factoring in the four liters he put in, it seems like he had burned about 1.9 liters since his last oil change (not good news in and of itself).

By the way...it's nice to be here!  This is my first post and I hope to be involved more! 

I doubt that there is any kind of permanent damage. Just needs to burn off the excess trapped in the rings.

At least he did not run it dry of oil.

That's the conclusion we just came to.  I ran back over there this morning after posting this and we decided to change his plugs.  It isn't smoking as much and seems to be getting better.  I think he'll be more careful from now on...one good thing is he now owns the service manual.

If the oily smoke is due to overfilling it will eventually burn off.
