Does  adding carburetor cleanner for cars to a  motorcycle work? :icon_confused:?

I've  cleanned my carburetors three times and still have some kind of problem, and I don't feel like doing it again!

Yeah any Carb cleaner works really, Seafoam and B-12 work pretty well, also I usually put in a dose of 'lucas upper cylinder lubricant'  with every tank.  It keeps your mileage up  :icon_razz:      But it doesn't sound like any of that will do much good if your carb is still acting up after 3 cleanings.  What exactly are the symptoms?

It is a 1994
12,000 miles
No mods to (exhaust , filter)

Symptoms:

Bike starts rightaway
engine runs smoothly
Won't go past 60MPH's
Doesn't have the power it used to have last summer.
After I open the Throttle, the bike stays accelerated @ 3,000 RPM's. when the engine is hot.
Backfires if I idle it @ 2,000 RPM's

Hmmm, Sea Foam eh? I think I'll give that a try. So does Sea Foam just get added to a full tank?

i <3 YouTube, check it,  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfQyTxQVHrk

Not past 60 clicks eh ...
Maybe you cleaned the damn thing so much that ... I dunno ... the diaphragms have a hole in them.
Check it out.
Lets say, your bike runs great in gears 1-3 ... and you are getting ~7K in 4th before it begins to sorta hit a wall, and 6K in 5th and 5K in 6th. Bingo ... diaphragm. Tiny tiny tiny hole will do it.
Over 60 clicks ... not the valves. If you have good start up and then it acts up and wont stay running till you rev and rev for ~5 minutes ... that is the start of valves going tight.
Remember, jetting depends on throttle position. Not RPM. A bike that runs great to 10K in 1st, acting up at 5K in 5th or 6th ... basically is not working over 1/2 throttle. 10K will be under 1/2 throttle in 1st ... 1/2 throttle is 5K in 6th. Bingo.
Cool.

As a first step, you need to adjust your valves and synch the carbs.  Tight valve clearances will cause a significant loss of power that will get worse over time.  Regardless of whether it is the cause of your problem or not, the valves should be checked every 4,000 miles and adjusted as necessary.  This will establish a baseline from which you can troubleshoot further.  However, I suspect adjusting your valves will fix the problem.

I suggest as a first step that you obtain a Clymer's maintenance manual for your bike.  The manual will guide you step-by-step through adjusting the valves and synching your carbs at the completion of your valve adjustment.

Kerry, a member here, made an excellent video on how to do a valve adjustment on the GS500.  It is available online from this link:

Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?

Question 1: Does anyone have detailed instructions on how to run Sea Foam through the vacuum line?

Question 2: Are Sea Foam and Berryman's B12 pretty much the same thing?

What exactly does it do at 60MPH? Mine would jump and surge. Took me two years to figure it out. Seems that the diaphrams got worn out.. no holes, just beat from carb cleaners etc...

To avoid more frustration and time see if you can get another used set of carbs from someone  :thumb: thats what I did  :thumb: Post in the for sale trade section and check eBay  :thumb:

I added Sea Foam to my tank and crankcase today. It's like steroids for your bike.
My bike runs better in every way possible. Idles, accelerates, and shifts smoother.
Impressive product.
