Ok - bit of a dilemma. I'm going to sell my trusty klr in a few months for a gs500.... but the honda cb750 has crept its way into my mind again. I almost got one a few years ago, but the price wasnt right, and yadda yadda you know how it works. The only reasons I like the gs more than the honda, is that it looks way better, its smaller and lighter, and its a lot easier to find for a good price :) Now the honda, Its got its good points too... bigger engine, smoother for long trips... and it would be better for two up riding (which, girlfriendless at the moment, means nada to me!) but.... eh.... its just so darn.... plain!!! It doesn't look bad or anything, it just doesn't really have any "character" like the little 500 does. I guess I'm just worried about the 500 on looong trips droning along at 70~75 mph on the highway for a couple hundred miles. Anyone ever have any experiences with the cb750? (nighthawk)
Current ride - none :(

what about the sv650(s)....its between that or a gixxer for me. The sv650s in my books is slick as hell and more then enough power for highway

btw, im selling my 2005 gs500f blue/white 12500km w/ yosh carbon fiber if ur interested

Agree on the SV650s, just upgraded to an 05 SV myself and I love it. Good gas mileage, plenty of power for the average joe.

I have yet to rid emy GS on the highway ( just finished rebuilding it after a long winter when I bought it).  But, what I have read is the GS doesn't have any real problem doing 70-80 MPH for extended periods.  I mean it is no touring bike, but it won't just keal over on you either.  These little engines are pretty close to bullet proof.  However, if I had the extra $$ I would have bought the GF an SV to play iwth and learn on, but I'm active duty Air Force = small pay check and already have a car and another bike so the budget was low.  Good luck.
Ride it like you stole it.  But, then fix it right.

I just rode a friend's [heavily modified] sv650. The speedometer hit just over 150 with me on it--230 pounds. I didnt know what to do.

I've never had any problem with my GS at highway speed :dunno_white:  I've even got a 14t sprocket up front :o    But I've heard a lot of good things about the SV

I have to admit to being rather partial to the SVS myself....  :icon_lol:

Choice between a CB750 Four and a GS500...no brainer.  Of course I'd be on ebay immediately after purchase to buy some CBR forks for the CB, but that's only because a 80hp 450lb bike with rubber bands holding the front together just isn't my idea of kosher.

+1 on sv650. an awesome do it all bike.

Yeah, you summed up my reasons for not considering the Nighthawk much... to me it just looks like a tall cruiser with more upright forks.  The old CB's though, those are sweet.  I wouldnt mind having a 70's CB450 or 500 twin...

I guess being a smaller guy I wanted a smaller bike...

As far as long distance, I've done 3000 miles in a week, and I'm not the only one on here.  I'll just say I wouldn't want to be doing superslab highway at 80 mph all day on the GS, unless maybe I had a ginormous plexistar fairing like GSJack.  But I've commuted every day doing up to 80 for a few miles with no problems.  My 3000 mile trip was mostly on smaller 55 mph highways doing maybe 60-65 and that seemed like the sweet spot

I think you should get the SV or bigger bike than GS. If you have ridden klr650 for some time, you are no longer a noob :) I would suggest GS to the beginner, but you might be disappointed. You might miss some low end power you had on KLR.

Check on SV650 deals around. Also i wouldn't buy naked if i had to commute a lot.

well, the sv is good and all.... but my pockets are very, -VERY- shallow. Plus isn't the seating position on the sv really "head forward?" I guess I'm just a dirtbike kinda guy and I like to be sitting upright... I dunno... I guess I will have to test ride a GS and see what I think.  :) As far as getting a bigger bike than the gs, eh... I've had many streetbikes from cruisers to sportbikes, and I have figured out that for me, the best bike is one that is light, and easily "thrown around" in emergency situations (and corners :) ). Plus I hear that the gs, while considered a beginner bike by most, is pretty darn fun for experienced riders in the twisties  :icon_twisted: I was just wondering about the cb750 because well, nobody ever really talks about it much and I didn't know a heck of a lot about it...

The SV650 version (as opposed to the SV650S) is pretty upright!  :icon_mrgreen:

how funny... the bike I gave up before I picked up a gs was a `79 cb750k...

The weight totally takes away from the bigger engine, even with a fresh rebuild! trust me! I'm having SOOOOO much more fun on the GS it isn't even funny... the best dam trade I've ever done... on top of all that... I hardly have to lift a finger for old girl to get her moving... the CB... shaZam! I had to work on her for bout an hour before I could ride...

my dad has a 95 nighthawk 750 it has around 35,000 miles on it. I've rode it quite a few times. Its wide so its a little hard for me to touch the ground since I'm only 5' 4". The bike is peppy, I love the way the stock exhaust sounds. All around excellent bike. Dad has a harley now (cause of mom) but he tells his harley buddies that he keeps the honda around for when his harley is broke down he can go pick up parts.

Don't you know you meet the nicest people on a honda?

 I'm sooooo going to send that to one of my friends... ya know the type that thinks harleys are the best thing since sliced bread...  :icon_rolleyes:

makenzie71 - is the nighthawk really rated for 80hp? I knew it was pretty peppy but I didn't know it had that much power... And whats this about rubber bands holding the front end together  :dunno_white:
