I pulled the back of the fuel chicken off on my 99 as part of troubleshooting an unresolved issue.

Upon pulling back cover off the gasket tore.

I am looking at the part fiche and I do not see the gasket not do I see the part as being serviceable.

Is this correct and I just cost myself $60.00 bucks?

Any other options?

Torn diaphragm ... Ha ha ... I have 1-10 like that. I think its frocked ... but maybe someone has a rebuild kit.

Do you have any used ones that are good to go for sale? Or do you have a few gutted ones where you can make me a kit?

Petcocks ... man I am like 3 petcocks short ... I have 1 between 2 bikes at the moment ... I have a ripped one off another GS ... see if there is a rebuild kit ... or see if any of the racers can spare one ... They swap out for pingels.

But if you wantt to get rid of all of that Junk from the Tank to the Frame and On to the Carbs I would Invest in a Pingel Petcock.It requires you to open up the Hole in your Tank a Little but you can Get rid of all of those Stupid Hoses and Petcocks ETC.If anyone is Interested I bought one from a Fellow here on the Board and can get the Part Numbers off of the Packages.You'll never have Fuel Starvation Problems Again.No Torn Diaphrams to worry about and No Vaccum Leaks.Oh and they look pretty Cool.

You can also just bypass the vacuum portion of the petcock and essentially make it a manual petcock.

Here is how you do it.

First remove the ring that has the labeling on it(ON,RES,PRI).

When you remove this you will then be able to take of the knob thing that is used to turn it.

There is a little blue plastic cone shaped deal that is the selector for the valve, simply rotate it 180. Then when you reinstall the knbo and cover plate you will need to turn those 180 as well.

You will then get this

Position      Result
ON              Flow through what should be the RES connnection

RES             Flow through what should be the ON position

Prime          No flow(even when vaccuum is applied)

So you the swap your ON and RES lines and to turn off the fuel supply simply turn it to the marked PRI postion

If you do this, try it out by blowing through the lines, to verify that it works with no vacuum.

You should take some pics too because I am too lazy to take mine back apart to prove it to everyone

You would also want to cut out  the center portion of the diaprham or take it out all the way and make a new gasket

Yeah I Modified my T500 Petcock to have an Off position.In order to do this I took the Long (On) Tube crimped it shut and Just left the Reserve as the (On) position.I then took out the Diaphram and Made a Big Gasket to fit Under the Plate to Seal Everything off.

I ditched the stock petcock entirely and used the valve off a Honda 450 dirtbike.  Here's a copy / paste of a post I made previously.



"Yea, I've been meaning to do a writeup on this mod for awhile now and just never got around to it.  It's very straightforward; the valve is a little bit smaller than the stock petcock so it fits easily into the normal spot.  There is a ledge on the mounting tab that prevents it from bolting right up.  One could either grind the tab flat or, like I did, use a longer bolt and some extra nuts / spacers to stand it off the GS's frame mount so the ledge isn't an issue.

The stock fuel hoses might be too short to reuse but I'm not sure since I replaced them all with 1/4" Tygon stuff cut to length.   

Ron Ayers carries the part for $22.06 but I picked mine up off e-bay for about $15.  It's #1 in the diagram:

The CRF450 uses the same valve and I figured if it flows enough for a 450cc 2-stroke then it should be fine for the GS.  I haven't had any problems with fuel starvation since I installed it but you do have to remember to close the petcock when parking the bike."
