Hello one and all :)  Let me start with a little about myself.

I've lived in upstate NY nearly my whole life.   Three summers ago I found my self in detroit following a good friend of mine around Woodward from my car watching him and his friend cruise around on thier bikes.  All it took was one weekend and I had the bug.

The next summer I pretty much sold everything I own to buy his 96 Yamaha FZR600R, and for that summer I had the time of my life.

Summer ended and I made the decision to go back to college and had to sell the bike to pay off enough credit cards and crap to be able to work part time so I could attend school.  I was almost in tears when I sold that bike.

Here we are two years later and 4 days ago I made a trip to the dealer and bought a brand new 06 GS500F.  What sucks atm is I havent even seen the bike as LOVELY NY STATE just dumped another 6-8 inchs of snow in my back yard.  I dont know who came up with 'I Love NY" but they can kiss my ars! lol

I've already got the bug to start toying with the new toy, but as expected Im a bit sketchy about tearing into a brand new bike.

List of things I might like to do?

Exhaust Airfilter ect ect

Clean up those ugly turn signals and tail lights

I've spent the last 4 days or so surfing through the forums and I think the first thing i'd like to do is to clean up the tail lights and turn signals.  Im going to assume that just like everything else for this bike, acctual parts designed for the back are pretty much non existant.

What have you all used?  Is there anything that comes close with little or no modification.   What im looking for is for some flush fitting front turn signals.  And something to clean up that rear tail light and turn signals.

2nd thing at some point I'm sure i'll add on a full exhaust and new K&N filter (beacuse I use them on everything anyway), I know the carb will need to be rejetted.  But knowing nothing but the basics of carbs how much can i expect to get hosed for if I ask the dealer to rejet the carb for me after I install the rest of it?

If this info is listed some place already and I some how missed it in my first 4 days of searching sorry just give me a point in the right direction.

Thanks one and all, now I just need to get this DAM SNOW TO MELT! :P

Awesome, congrats on the purchase!  You wont regret it, the GS really is an awesome bike.  All of my friends call the GS my trusty side-kick.  As all of my other vehicles come and go (car, other motorcycles, bicycles, etc) the GS is always around.

The first thing I did was to remove the rear fender.  See my pictures in the following thread...

http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=34395.msg383200#msg383200

If you do replace the signals, please please get something that is every bit as visible as stock.  Most aftermarket signals are a freakin' joke and could very well get you killed.

Are you mechanically inclined?  Rejetting the carbs is extremely easy.  By searching around here on the forums, or even asking (oh no, another rejetting thread! :o ) we can help you get the right set up.

Congrats again on the bike, and get us some freakin' pictures once the snow melts!

Ride safe,

Grats on the bike.  I cut my rear fender to look like this and I added the intergrated rear turn signal's from www.clearalternatives.com.   Here's a photo

If you want a full exhaust jardine has one.  As for jet's my sig has the jet sizes I ran it ran a bit rich, I think I needed to put the mixture screw at 2.5 or 3 turns out instead of 3.5.

For the front I'd suggest some short stalk turn signals it really cleans up the look of the bike.   Just about any generic aftermarket turn signals can be made  to fit just get the ones you like the look of.
Pilot 22.5, Mid 65 , Mains 147.5, Mixture screw 3.5 turns out

Even if the voices aren't real they have some good ideas.

Thanks for the replies,   and Turd thats exactly what I was wondering.  I had seen a few flush mounted front signals here and there on the forums and thats exactly what I was wondering if they were acctually visable or not :P

As far as being mechanically inclined, I would like to think so, I've done some toying around here and there in the past with my car and past bike, I just really have never seen a carb (well not that wasnt already installed on a car)  i guess first thing i need to do is get the bike ! And have a little get to know each other session.

Think i'll try to tackle the lighting issue first before going nuts on the exhaust

That is exactly the kind of thing I think im looking for but  again Im concered about the whole visability thing.  (Dumped my first bike FIRST NIGHT I took it out beacuse my buddies turn signals were almost invisiable, and that was at night :(   )

But If i could clean up the back like that maybe use LED's so its nice and bright and do something similar up front I'd be more than happy.  I just so happen to come accross that site about 20 min ago, started looking at it seems people use a chopped up Trailer hitch plug which is a great idea but having just dropped 6k on the bike im going to have to ease into chopping into the wiring.

Welcome! :thumb:

I don't know if this is what you're looking for, but here's a thread in the FAQ section about LED stuff.  :thumb:

So you know, first hand, exactly what I'm talking about!  I've ridden with countless people with either flush mount signals or integrated rear signals.  I don't condone the use of either because the visibility is so poor.

Another thing that I feel like people overlook; Visibility is not only a function of brightness.  If rear signals do not stick out from the bike (i.e. integrated signals) they are still very hard to see, no matter how bright they are.

Do a search for the Buell signals.  They are super bright and don't stick out as far, but still have a few inches of stalk and are very safe signals.  They also look teh sex. 8)

I'll keep that in mind  Turd   But I'll see what I can do

anthonyd5189 Your bike was acctually the one I was lookin at :P

I was lookin at that tail light.  How do you think the visability is?  I was reading through some of thier site and was wondering as it wasnt really clear there, how much modification did it require to put in?

What did you use for the front signals? hard to install? how much modification did you go though (cringes at the thought of drilling lol)

Ops missed the post with the link to the FAQ section :P

For the fronts...yes I had to drill .  But it took me maybe 30 mins to put both on.  Not hard at all.

The tail light was easy...you just take the bulbs out of the stock one...put in the LED board...plug one part into a light socket, then attach the turn signal wires to 2 wires off the board and your done.  Visibility is decent.  I can't say for sure since I haven't really seen it from a cars point of view.

I think it doesn't matter too much though because I feel that the car thats going to hit you/cut you off is the one who's most likely going to do it anyways because they really just don't see you.  So far I have not had a problem with cars not seeing me or not knowing my intent.
