Oil leaks in the following areas.

-Tach cable
-Cam chain tensioner
-Valve cover.

Question is why the hell is there oil all over my tach cable? where would it be leaking? It's screwed in using loc-tite.

I guess I'll just pop the valve cover off and have a look.

I've never dealt the the camshaft tentsioner but I know it's very important to the operation of the bike. Can someone explain to me.
A) What it is
B) What I have to worry about by removing it?
C) What I have to do the get it back on?

I don't know jack about timing an all that crap so.....best if I can avoid it.

OK so the cam chain feeds of the crankshaft and drives the cams which bump the valves open,
but the chain must be taut or it will mess the timing  :nono:
Tensioner comes out with two bolts and you can replace the gasket and inspect it at the same time

Won't that reduce tension and make the chain go slack? fill the chain fall in the engine? What will I have to do to get the chain back to the same taughtness?

The chain will go slack when you remove the tensioner but as long as you don't run the engine you'll be fine. The tensioner is spring loaded so once you replace it the tension should be restored.

The tach cable oil leak is the easiest thing on the whole GS to fix...  Even I managed it...   :o

Are you sure oil is leaking through all 3?

My humble guess is that your valve cover is leaking or sweating oil. Can be fixed with some sealant, in rare and worse cases a new valve rubber gasket is needed.

Clean the engine thouroughly on the outside and right after your next ride check where the most oil is.
I would start by fixing the leak over there, and if you're lucky, that was the only leak.

VERY IMPORTANT!!  When you replace the cam chain tensioner, you MUST retract the tensioner ram using a screwdriver to 'hold' the spring (you will see the slot for the screwdriver for 'rewinding' and holding the spring).

Second: if the leak is coming from the little rubber plug on the back of the CCT, use some Permatex RTV sealant (650 degree heat tolerance) to seal around that area and allow at least a 12 hour period for it to set.  I just did mine.

The oil from the cam cover may actually be from the crankcase vent cover on top of the cam cover.  Replace that gasket every time, and I suggest using Gaskacinch on both sides.
