Driving While Drowsy?

What do you folks think of this:

It is now illegal to drive drowsy in New Jersey

The law is only enforceable after somebody gets hurt, unless somebody is developing an eye-lid-alizer test to tell how sleepy a driver is.  Will this really prevent cagers from driving sleepy?  I'm not so convinced.  People generally feel way too comfortable and safe in their cars and trucks to feel like a little drowsiness is a good reason to pull over.

anybody else got an opinion?

Tech TV showed a machine that someone is developing that is supposed to be added to future passenger cars.  It basically scanned your eyes while you drive.  If it sensed you closing your eyes or your eyes wandering, it sounded an alarm.  I am sure it would include a memory function to allow police to go back and check after an accident.

I think it's great that driving while drowsy is now illegal.  It's no better than driving drunk.  In either case, you are not in control of your actions.  I have dozed off once on the way from my girlfriend's house.  I woke up and I was in the oncoming lane.  Good thing it was about 1:00 a.m. and there was no one coming the other way.  I would have never fogiven myself fi I had hurt anyone or worse. I now leave her house much earlier.

If I remember correctly, you have to have been awake for over 24 hours to be charged with this law, which is extremely hard to prove when you last slept.

It think it is just one of those laws that was just to make people happy.  I have seen studies, that show sleepy drivers are just as dangerous as drunk drivers.

Time as they say, will tell.
Cheers!

They're already working on the Drowse-o-meter.  They've tested it on truckers as early as 18 months ago.  Something about short delays with  the eyes following motion, kinda like when you're drunk...

frankly just after an accident, unless head trama has occured, the last thing i was is sleepy, and frankly who isnt tired after coming off a massive adrenilin rush of a wreck or emergency? that drowse o meter is a joke and wont hold up, Maybe if and i mean IF, you get pulled over for swerving and they test you it might work. frankly im super wide awake when the red and blues wave to me in the mirror, weather im pissed at them, or scared.    Friad this law is going to be a crapshoot to enforce.
