Wow I hate the 14T sprocket

I just installed this thing and I'm kinda pissed. 6000 RPM @ 50mph in 6th gear. I heard that the 14T pretty much makes 6th like 5th, but I'd say it's closer to 4th gear. Plus, I'd have to take a link out of the chain to keep it. Guess we'll try a 15T.

edit: i was just doing the math on this and i should be at 67 mph at 6000 rpm. Now I'm confused.  :dunno_white:

Its very easy to calculate the change in RPM for a given speed with any sprocket combo...  Shoulda done your research!

How much you want for that 14t?

Well thats why I'm confused, cause i did the math and it shouldn't be that bad. Does 50 mph at 6000 rpm sound right to you? That like 4th gear in stock.

No, but it doesn't sound horribly far off.  Are you positive that your rear sprocket is a factory 39 tooth piece?  What size tire are you running?  It definitely sounds high, according to Alpha, he was turning 7,000 RPM at 80mph in 6th.  Are you sure you weren't in 5th?

I could have sworn i was in 6th cause I kept kicking the thing up thinking i was in 5th. I got the bike new so it's all stock. Either way, i'm not in the mood to get a new chain. I brought the rear wheel all the way out and it's still got way too much slack. Should work with a 15T though.

Yeah, you'll likely need a different chain set up with a 14t.  A 15t should work with your current chain length.

Throw your 14t up in the "For Sale" section once you swap a 15t on.  There are plenty of people here who would be willing to give you good money for it.

Stock is 47-4800 rpm at 60 mph.  4750 x 16/14 = 5428 at 60 mph with 14T.

In 5th gear it should be about 5428 x .961/.851 = 6130 rpm at 60 mph with 14T.

You must have been in 5th.  A 10% speedo error and worn rear tire

could make it close to 6000 rpm at 50 mph indicated with 14T in 5th.

The EX500 is a mid 80's design and the GS500 is a 70's design engine.  The newer Honda 500 design should out perform it:

ABS on a 500 too, kinda makes ya wanna sneak on the plane and go home with the Queen.      We'll never see such bikes in this country unless gas gets over $5/gal.

I have the 14T

I bought the sprockets and chain together, 108 link chain with stock 39 rear. puts me right in the midle of the adjustment range.
I run in 6th 6000 rpm @ 60 and match like that most of the way to red line. It's a little hard to get used to but I like  it so far.
If I had it to do over again i would likely go stock up front and bigger in the rea,r just for clearance. I wanted to lift the rear but now I think the chain will rub the swingarm. The acceleration is a lot faster but 1st and 2nd are really short.
Top speed is higher but i'm not sure of how well it was running last year becauce I did a tune-up at the same time as the chain and sprokets

I've seen older honda 400 fairing bikes I think they put out like 65-70hp. but I have never heard anyone talk about them.

Yeah, except for that £3,999.00 (approx $8000 USD) pricetag!

Well, I guess all the bikes are priced a little higher over there...

I have a 14T on mine, and at 6000 rpm indicated the bike is at 60mph.  I want to go down to a 15T, to me it just seems like too much rpm at highway speed.  I know the bike can go all the way up to redline but is it good to be running it up at 7000 constantly?  When I bought mine it had the 14T so I don't know what anything else is like.  I would hate to lose too much acceleration but I would like a lower RPM on the freeway.  Maybe 7000-8000 is ok to cruise at?

I just switched to the 15T, and I love it ! There's still a noticable increase in the bikes pull through the gears, especially in the power band. It's comfortable to cruise on also, and while my speedo has a +/- 10 mph bounce in it, 60's around 5500, and 70's at 6000, I think. i just did 500 miles last weekend, no freeways, and it was fine.

If going up to a 15T in the front still isn't enough, you could add a tooth in the rear and be closer to the 14T, but not quite. Anyways, that's my two ...
