Help! Leaking oil after oil/filter change

Hey guys,
I just got done putting my bike back together after rebuiling/frame painting, etc. Well one of my last steps was changing the oil and filter. After a few days, I notice a little spotting where the bike had been sittin, maybe 2cc's at best, I figure, no big deal, probably the drain plug washer.

So last night, me and Badguy start up the bike (super excited because she was a bare frame two weeks ago after a long rebuild), she starts right up and a few seconds later I notice probably a half liter of oil (probably the same leak as before enduced by compression) on the ground and immediatly cut off the bike.

Upon further investigation, we find that the oil filter cover is where the leak is coming from. Pulled it off and looked at the gasket, it seems that I pinched it and split it. My question is will a split in the gasket really cause it to bleed like an open wound? Is there anything that I should know about tightening down the cover? Any tips on this?

The other thing that we noticed is that on my '93, there is only one recessed "dot" on the filter cover and I don't know which direction that is to be facing.

Any help is greatly appreciated, I will try again today (sunday) with a fresh gasket and some new oil.

Yes, pinching and cutting the gasket will cause that much of a leak.

Some of the replacement filters come with gaskets. The Fram does, I know. The OEM Suzuki does not, so if you go that route you'll have to order separately. I mention this because auto places don't even know the gasket is in there, so they don't know they have one in the building. You can always buy a Fram, use the gasket, and order another gasket at your convenience for the next change.

I haven't popped any of the studs on mine yet. I don't think there really that weak, it's just that they're no stronger than you would guess from their (small) size. Some here have said snug it down gently with a 1/4 inch drive, then one quarter-turn further. That sound about right.

Here's what I do, I take the old gasket out (save it for emergencies), make sure everything is clean, then use the side of my finger to lay a little bit of thick grease all along the channel, put the new gasket in, press it into the grease, and wipe away any excess. The main function of the grease is to hold the gasket in place while I'm replacing the cover. No problems yet.

Mine has the two recesses, so I wasn't sure, but on the fische here:

.. it shows the singe recess as going up. Might not make any difference, but there it is.

Good luck.

That worked very well, no leaks yet :: knock on wood::
