Hey all,
I've had my 93' GS for about 3 months now, 12k miles. On my ride back home today noticed that when I rev kinda high a lil smoke comes out the exhaust. Now I'm no mechanic and after 10 years I don't expect perfect preformance but should I be concerned. Its only when reved past say 8k and not a killer cloud but lil puffs. I found it disconcerning I know GS's burn oil, but mine really doesn't need extra oil between changes and its ridden 30+ miles four or 5 days a week. Lemmi know whats going on!
Thanks Mucho!

Well Mine uses 300 miles a quart...so you happy now. Just kidding...
Anyway at 6-7K miles it started using oil and never smokes...well just under high rpm... a little and still manages to use so much. But its not died in 40K miles. so it should run a long time in spite of this...
Cool.

Hey,
Yeah sorry I'm really impaitent esp w/ my bike. I'm a student so it took me a good year to save up for it while still paying all my other bills. Before I ever decided to get a bike I saw a GS online and fell in love, I didnt know squat about bikes but i loved the look. Somehow I end up getting interested and was lucky enough to come across a GS at a good price. Its my pride and joy I love that bike to death, so if anything might be wrong I freak out.  :o  Its not the fastest bike, or the most desireable of the masses, but I love my GS and wouldnt trade it for the world.

i really wouldnt worry about it much, a little puff here/there is nothing you need to lose sleep over. mileage is relatively young, if srinath can get 41k+ on his and gsjack got over 71k on his, i dont think you have much to worry about. just keep an eye on the oil level.  i ride mine hard, but havent had to add any oil yet, except a little right after the change.

Maybe temperature has something to do with it.  I changed oil a month ago, and had zero oil lost over several weeks.  Then I checked the oil today (first check in about 5 days), and the oil had dropped halfway down through the crosshatched area, and also changed color (much darker)!  I don't think I'm riding any harder; but at about the same time, the morning temperatures dropped from 65 to 45.  Maybe winter has an affect on oil loss/burn.  Maybe if it takes an extra few minutes to warm-up, then that's when alot of the oil gets burned?

So just when i'm calming down about the smoke. I wonder about the lil dots on my driveway. I look under my GS today after a ride and theirs oil leaking!!!  :x Son of a Bi*** BUT i think its something simple. I did a oil change recently, my first, and I think i didnt put the oil filter cover back on correctly, that or the gasket is shot(reused orig). It appears to be coming from that area. I'm gonna check it out more tmo. Wish me luck!!!

be careful not to overtighten the cap bolts-they snap off easily. if they do, my site has a how to on replacing them easily.

my 01 with 6k miles on it smoked pretty bad one long hard ride I did and I haven't been able to replicate it since. I figured I had overfilled the oil level just before the ride and that caused it-possibly. It hasnt smoked since, or at least no one ridingbehind me said anything other than that first time.

I wouldnt worry about a little smoke though-just keep an eye on the oil level-very important.

The O-ring may have come out of its groove slightly as you put the oil filter cover back, and gotten pinched between the cover and the mating surface on the engine.  Or, there may be some grit on or next to the O-ring.

Make sure everything is CLEAN, and if the O-ring got pinched then you'll have to use a new one.

Take the gasket and put it in the manual for a few days prior to putting it in the bike. Then when the caover is off... put gascacinch on both the gasket and the cover, let it dry and glue up and then put it back on. That way it wont shift when tightening.

Well,
I took off oil filter cover today and the gasket is pretty flat. It fits in the groove and doesnt stick out at all. I assume a new one would stick out some to provide a seal, right? This one just fits in and is flattened off. Hopeing it would be a temp. fix I cleaned it up and replaced the oil and went to work. Well as I stand here now I can see a little puddle. I'm pretty sure a new gasket will fix it and man I hope so(assuming thats the problem...). I'll have to get the new part and hope for the best. Thankfully the leaks is small and only after its been running. But my driveway is looking like a dalmation.
OH WELL  :P Just one of the joys of owning a motorcycle
Thanks

I have been able to find STP oil filters that come with o-rings at the local Auto Zone. Easier then driving to the bike shop and paying 20% more.

Thanks for all the help! Changed out that gasket and no more leaks. A lil air in the tires and I'm all set for a much needed weekend road trip. You only get a few weeks of weather like this in South Alabama, gotta get out while you can.
Thanks mucho!  :thumb:
