Passed my motorcycle skills test today. No deductions, 100%. I'm super happy. They woman who was grading me said, "you ride dirt bikes don't you?" I was like yep, for the past 10 years or so. She said, people who grow up riding dirt bikes always seem to do well on the test. There was a kid from my school who showed up to take his test in shorts and a t-shirt.  :icon_rolleyes: I did meet a nice guy there who said he'd had his temps for 8 years.  :o We both passed, and well I'll stop rambling on. I'm just really happy, except for the 2+ hours I spent there.  :icon_rolleyes:

On those days when life is a little too much and nothing seems to be going right, I pause for a moment to ponder the wise last words of my grandfather:  "I wonder where the mother bear is?"

The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

Thanks guys, I'm glad I got it over with. Now I can just ride, and not have to worry about all the temp stuff.

took mine saturday.  i was a little worried about the weave and u-turn.  passed those with no problem.  lost 2 points though.  1 cause i stalled the bike(had slipped off clutch while slowing to turn around) and 1 on the braking.  had to stop from 12-20mph in 10 feet.  i did it in 11.  oh well i passed.  not nearly as hard as expected

i thought it was going to be hard too, but it really wasn't that bad.  The two people who I talked to before i took it said it was really hard and they almost failed. They both had 600 sportbikes though, so that could be it.

can you take us through a few things you had to do?

Here in South Australia to pass you have to:  :icon_rolleyes:

do a figure 8 (left hand u-turn then right hand u-turn within a smallish rectangle

travel through a snake like curve ie tight left then tight right without touching or going over the lines

weave between a series of cones that are closer than the bike is long

take 15sec or more to travel between parallel lines without touching them (about a foot? apart and 10metres long) this is like riding the bike at walking pace while keeping a straight line

an emergency stopping setup... 30km/h to stop in a short space, if you take too much room you fail, even if you passed everything else

the main thing is feathering the clutch and riding the rear brake with most (I think) to pass, once passed you move on to a restricted licence (from being on your L's)

oh yeah, it costs you $270 (Australian, prob $250US) for the pleasure of taking the test  :icon_confused:

Man, thats harsh! Here in the states, or Ohio atleast. You only have to do four runs.

1. Ride about 20 feet make a sharp left inside some L shaped lines then come to a stop with your front tire in a box. Any speed on that.

2. Swerve through 5 (I think) cones, plenty of space for the gs. Then come back and make a U turn in a 20 ft area. (I think its 20, I made it in a lot less)

3. Accelerate and stabilize speed 12-20 mph, then emergency stop in a certain amount of distance relative to speed. With my speed i was allowed to go 16 feet, but stopped at 11.

4. Accelerate again 12-20 mph, and swerve left or right of a line, not hard at all.

Really the whole test was easy, but the best part was...its free. I only had to pay $25 for my new license.

Maryland (US) it's all that you Australians do but + an emergency stop in a cornering situation where you going 20-35mph then have to straighten the bike and pull a quick stop. Yep you better believe during practice people low slide :icon_rolleyes: It's fun to watch atleast. Most people fail because of the figure 8/ u-turn box<<because they can't counter balance and havn't learned the faster you go the more stable a motorcycle is....anyways yea we had a few temporary licensed harley bad-ass "buddies" who couldn't turn the little nighthawk around duckwalking and who also complained that this little bike will never stop that quick...I got a kick out of watching most people lock the rear and Mr. Harley dude who was HUGE on this little bike...you were like poor poor little honda..he was big like 6' 285-300lbs....hahah makes me smile every time I get that picture in my head.

back four years ago it cost $105 in USD I think it's $150 now...BCR course...I took the ECR in the spring and went through the MSF instructor class and worked there part time during the summer...they really don't pay well but that's another story I was doing it for fun/entertainment

sounds like our is similar to ohio's (i'm in illinois). swerve through 5 cones 12ft apart and offset 2ft. u-turn(book said in 20ft, instructor said 24ft) emergency stop from 12-20mph.  you have to stop in 10ft. and an emergency lane change.  ours is $10 for riding permit. the test is free and the license reclassification in free. had a friend do it last saturday on a zx6r.  failed first time but got it on the second. alot easier the i figured.  i even went to the dmv and measured the swerve section and marked it out on a road that hardly has any traffic.  tried it dozen times or so and couldn't do it.  it worried me but the day i took the test i thought it was easy.
