Well, I'm at work but I felt like posting an update to this thread that I started a few months ago:

http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=33541.0

Basically I was asking opinions on what people thought about me taking the MSF BRC as a returning rider... I thought about it long and hard, and decided it definitley couldn't hurt, so I contacted the local course locations and got the paperwork.  Well I ended up not taking it, and just taking my road test... Two things happened that caused me to not take it... A) They were booked solid thru July!! Since my permit would expire at the end of June, my decision was made for me... B) The woman booking one of the courses told me that she felt with my experience I would be better served to take the test and schedule the intermediate or even advanced courses held in August.

So, in early April, I took my test.  Now THAT was quite an experience.  They scheduled me for 8am on a Wednesday morning, when I got there they had me drive to the local DOT lot with the 37 other riders... LOL.  Needless to say I missed most of work that day, I ended up being somewhere around #28 to take the test.

Of the 37 testers, sadly about 30 were squids with liter bikes.  The conversation before the testing started was about top speed, wheelies, stoppies, etc. from most of them, though I did meet a few VERY cool people.  In a lot of ways I was VERY put off by what went on that day, the test really was kind of a joke, minus one sharp left turn.  And it was pretty scary to see some of these guys taking the test, feet down around every corner, stalling, etc... and those are the ones that passed!  I think only 2 people failed, one was a CEO looking guy who was all decked out in fancy leathers and gear, on an expensive looking BMW (he even left the luggage case on the back for the test  :cookoo: ).  He looked like he was going down from the second he let out the clutch... and he did... dropped the bike right on top of himself going thru the cone weave.  I was embarassed for the guy, but in a way I was glad(only for the reason that he wasn't going to get his license... he should NOT have been on the road!).  I told him he NEEDED to take some courses ASAP and practice.  And take off the damn luggage! LOL.  The other guy was one of the squids on a Ninja ZX-11.  I am so glad this guy failed, he could not handle that bike at low speed at ALL.

Anyway, that's that...  I've already logged about 1500 miles on the bike since February LOL!  Really figuring out what it can/can't do... last month I had the front AND rear tire sliding on a turn... that was a bit scary... but I just love how forgiving this bike is.  I know people like to really rev this thing up... but I'll tell you I've been have a LOT of fun winding it from low RPM's in the higher gears coming out of a turn... the power is there, and it sounds awesome when I do that... maybe it's the V&H combo'ed with the rejet and K&N.... but I actually like the power on this thing.  I have to check the sprockets and see what I have because it actually feels a lot torquier than I thought it would.  Anyway really digging this 'ole '98 GS500e!  Going to try the Rutand Grill polish trick on the header pipes... I'll let everyone know how it works out...

Thanks for listening to my rambling (or not! LOL)

I took the MSF last summer and I got a ton of useful info and tips from it.  I hadnt been on a bike in 15 yrs and I had never owned a street bike so I thought it would be a good step.

The course has saved me $$$ on insureance PLUS saved my neck atleast once.

Great course but was a long ass weekend.  My left leg and clutch hand were killing me at the end.

I was in the same boat sort of, dirt and enduros as a kid, quads, though I did have a couple of streetbike for quite a while around the time I was in college.  Wrecent Ryders course sounds grueling, LOL.  Actually, when I first got on this bike for the test ride, it felt like I never even stopped riding.  I picked up that Ride Like a Pro video to practice for my test.  Also I have proficient motorcycling... I would like to take a Street/track day course, or the advanced MSF course though.  You can never practice or learn to much about riding, for sure.  Getting comfortable could get you in trouble to...

Connecticut... and actually I'm probably overstating it a bit in my original post, but yeah it was kind of scary.  The tester was not a biker... not sure how much that matters but I was kind of surprised at that.  But yeah, I thought he was way to lenient... I would've failed at least 6 people out of the group.  I wish I had a video, it could be a commercial for the MSF, LOL...

The squidliness was the worst part.  I was a little bit nutty as a kid myself, but I never would've ever thought about buying the biggest bike I could get my hands on and not even get any training on how to ride it.
