Engine Problems

I have had an issue with my idle since last year and now I want to figure out the problem.  I adjusted the idle screw last year and the bike has never been the same.  After adjusting the idle at the beginning of last year it continued to hold a high idle the whole year.  Now, being a new season, my engine is really acting up.  This year when I went to fill my tank, the bike died on me.  I pushed it the rest of the way to the gas station and was able to get it started and get home.  It seems that after it runbs for 5 minutes or so that my bike bogs down until it stops running.  It won't hold an idle.  If I wait a half hour or so, it starts up again and runs awhile. It still continues to bog down every time I start to ride down the road.  Also, when I rev the engine, it seems to bog down too.  I am going to work on the bike this weekend.  Is it a carb issue, clogged jet, or too much fuel??  Any suggestions?

I moved the petcock around to reserve and regular tank, but it does not change anything.  I have 14000 miles on the bike and changed my plugs last year when I noticed the problem.  I plan on checking my gap again this weekend, but I set the gap per the recommended values.  At that time, I found a spark plug that was kindof dry and black between the electrodes.  I haven't checked the valves or compression yet and it has new gas.  In fact, the gas I did have in the tank emptied out after a couple months during the winter.  I usually started the bike every month over the winter, but sometimes it was too cold and it wouldn't turn over.  To my knowledge it has not been wrecked or dropped on its side.  Any suggestions on what I should check first?

Not the frame petcock, the tank petcock.

Well, I was able to check the tank petcock and that was not it.  I think it is really a fuel line problem from how it runs.  The bike will start up fine and run for 5 minutes or so, but once it gets warmed up a bit, it idles down and stalls.  I drained a little bit of gas from the left carb and noticed that it was a little dark.  The right side was clear.  I noticed that the tank vent hose was plugged on the end.  When I opened the slit back up a bunch of brown gas flooded out of it.  I wanted to restart the engine but it is a little late for my neighborhood.  I will try again tomorrow.   Think my chances are good for my bike to be back to normal???

I would start by checking the valve clearance. Then pull the carbs, and spray carb cleaner into every orifice you can get to without disassembling further than pulling the bowls and needle valves (be sure to not mix up the needle valves, they should go back into the same carb they came out of). Put everything back together, top off the tank with fresh gas, add a pint of Seafoam to the tank, and try starting it. When you get it going, try to go for a ride long enough to use up the whole tank of gas.
