Spare GSX-R?   Ha, that's a laugh.  If I get another bike before I sell the GS500 (er, if I sell the GS500), that would make all of two bikes I have (not counting the Raleigh mountain bike).

My wife says that I can have as many motorcycles as she has cello's -- and her cello is worth the same amount as the Vee-Strom I have my eyes on.

Truth be known there's only one spot in the garage for a motorcycle.  I'd have to kick either one car (mine) or one bike outside if ever an ABS comes available.

I have a dark blue Raleigh M50 mt bike.  Gets me around town nicely.

This ride is a large undertaking, many more miles and more saddle time than the Pinckney Area ride we did last year.  I myself would have some 120 miles to get to Manistee.  I figure another 140 for the ride, then its another 120 back again -- something close to 400 miles and two tanks for the day.  I'm going to plan and pack the bike the night before and head out by 7:30 or so for a 10:00 meet -- by 8:30 for an 11:00.

There's no shame in giving this a pass -- this one is probably on the verge of my ability to do in a single day.  As Clint Eastwood once said, "A man's got to know his limitations".  Even more important on a motorcycle where you've got to have your wits about you every second you're moving.

Me thinks Pinckney would follow this event, late August.

WE could start at the Catholic school, its a bit south of town, right on 31.

1200 Us Highway 31 S, Manistee, MI

I'd like to toss another idea to kick around.

There's a McDonalds in Manistee that just a bit farther south of the Catholic School, at 1630 S. US 31.  I'm thinking a couple of benefits:

  • They're extremely easy to find, what with the red and yellow "M" sign.
  • If we're cold or hungry, there's something to satisfy.
  • If it's wet we're sheltered.
  • After two hours on the road, I'm sure to need to pee.   :)

    What do ya think?

Edit: I should add that I do not have any financial interest in McDonalds -- just take advantage of them from time to time.

lol that seems like a very good idea there Roy. "M" stands for motorcycle!

I think its still probably going to be a better idea for me to leave the day before, then sleep over night somewhere close. That way I dont have to worry about anything besides sleeping in too late. :)

PS: I sold my SV yesterday, so here's hoping I can find my new steed soon!

denman

i like that idea, for all points.   the big M   see y'all.

There sure are enough of'em.

Ah, the frivality of youth.  Pretty gutsy move, Jeremiah -- agreeing to go on a motorcycle trip and not having a motorcycle to do it with.   :)  You must be smitten with that DL650 -- I must say that I would not have thought that bike was your style.  I like it because of the comfort factor.  My second choice is a Yamaha FZ6.

If you do buy I'll be envious when we meet.  See you in 7 weeks.  O0

Fear not! Though my actions may seem brazen at times, i'm quite resourceful when it comes to my toys. :) And yes, i'm very smitten with the DL, even more so seeing as how I road my 05 DL650 home yesterday! :thumb: The bike is soooo much more comfortable than the SV, yet has the same speed and acceleration. Plus the 250-some-odd-miles you get to a tank is going to be a added benefit for these UP trips.

I'll post some pics hopefully later when I get home from work.

PS: This is the THIRD bike that when i picked it up, it downpours on the way home. Are the heavens crying at my pleasures?? lol

RedShift

Okay Jeremiah.  Been patient for two days -- spill the beans.    What did you replace your SV650 with?  What did you get with it and how much did you pay for it?

SORRY! lol

Your totally right, i've been riding all weekend.  O0 Just got back from going to my friends place, then he road on the back for the trip home. Bike handles really well with two-up, which was kind of surprising.

Anyway, I apologize if this image is massive, or just doesn't show. I really dont know what i'm doing when it comes to posting pics.  :icon_confused:

Edit: Oops, forgot the details! I found the bike locally on craigslist and agreed on $5100. Seems kind of high, but it came with a $400 Givi trunk + 2 helmets & jacket. Plus its cheaper to insure than my SV  :icon_lol:

manofthefield

Very nice, I look forward to seeing it in person :thumb:

Before I get completely envious, how many miles does it have?  I'm guessing under 2000 and you got it from someone who wants out of motorcycling?

Inquiring minds want to know.   :)

Well done by the way...

Roy, you are close! It had 3700 miles, and was in a storage unit most of its life. The guy I bought it from was moving to California, so he didn't want to bother shipping the bike. I was really trying to talk him down to $4900 without the gear, but he was pretty firm at 5100 and I didn't want it to get away . . . so I bit.

BTW: Thanks for the comments. One of the reasons I sold my SV was to get away from the whole "i'm cool because I ride a loud sportsbike" image. Whats funny though, is that i've gotten more positive comments on the "touring" bike in 2 days than I did on the SV the whole time I owned it. lol

RedShift

Okay, it worked. I'm envious now.

Will hve to broaden my efforts to find a Wee-Strom. My local dealer must be having a tough time getting an ABS version out of Suzuki -- I feel a phone call coming on tomorrow.

I think $5100 is a fair price for the parts you have on it.  Nice bike.
