Hiya all
Does anyone know what sort of mileage a 1997 GS 500 should have as mine has 45000 miles is this good or not?
Cheers John

Something like 4k or 5k per annum seems reasonable, it is not thrashed but has been ridden.

In Cricket the testicular guard, or Box, was introduced in 1874. The helmet was introduced in 1974. Is there a message??

wow. i picked mine (98) up a little over a year ago, with only 3,000. now it's rolling over 16,000.

someone rode yours consistantly, but not alot. i'd bet it's in good shape motor and drivetrain wise with that kind of mileage. if you don't service things they tend to fall apart with that many miles.

are you commuting on it ?

Here's KBB's opinion on used bike milage, only goes back to 98 though:

Yours seems a bit on the high side by their standards and a bit on the low side by mine.  :)  I parked my 97 with over 80k miles on it last June and it just went back in service with a new owner.   :thumb:

407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

My 97 now has about 70,000 km which is about 43,000 miles ,  it was abused by PO , I couldn't stand all the noises and rebuilt the engine at
48,000 km

I got my 1994 GS500E about 1.5-2months ago with ~1500 miles on it. She is now up to a little over 3k. I plan on putting many more on her when I get my tire and fork seals :D

GS500E with a bunch of cool stuff!

a bike need to be riden to keep all the bits working smooth ,. so the ends lubed , and its all having usage instead of being left ,so your 16 year old bike has done 10 miles a year.., and sitting the rest of the time ?

I dont personally think thats any good?

I bought my 93 in 2005...with less than 500 miles on it...for $100 dollars. Yes it sat...yes it had issues..but nothing that couldn't be fixed. At Rich's memorial ride last summer, no one could believe that my odo reflected actual mileage.

Just because a bike has been sitting doesn't mean its not any good. If you found a Ferrari 166MM Barchetta in a barn that had been sitting for decades would you say its no good? In case anyone was wondering where that example came from   Clearly a GS isn't worth that much..but seriously don't discount something solely based on age. I wouldn't trade my bike for any other gs...

The only time stuff "being stuck" is an issue, is when people try and start/run/etc and damage things. For a mechanical noob something thats been sitting is a bad idea..for someone who knows basic maintenance and engines its no big deal..

humm average mileage depends on if the rider uses it to commute to work or not...

I ride 2300 Miles a month on my GS, so thats an average of 27,000 miles a year...
Mileage doesnt not mean I abused the ride,  it mean I use it to the pretty much full extend of it...

As long as the bike was serviced (by owner or shop) ask for papers relating to maintenance, I bought the 2005 GS with 10,000 miles on it, it had all the maintenance papers with it... Got a "friend" that races ducattis (he owns his own race team/shop) and such on the track to inspect it, and after he gave me a list of "things to change/check" (none relating to engine) I bought it.

I expect to have 25-30,000 on the dial next year at this time.
