Just thought id make a point

point taken, but what many on the other side of the pond don't seem to immediately realize about the US is this:

In most places, we have NO decent public transit infrastructure, and our country positively SPRAWLS.  It sucks, but thats the way it is.  In my neck of the woods, property prices make the 50 mile + commute commonplace.  I did this for many months and I paid about 8% of my annual salary on gasoline.  It was still cheaper than living next to my workplace.

I live in Pennsylvania now, and I buy strawberries from California, blueberries from Michigan, oranges from Florida, and apples from Washington state.  I'm pretty sure they didn't walk to get here.

Our nation was built on cheap gas, which was a shameful lack of foresight.  Still, that's the way it is.

I once was fortunate enough to live 2 miles from my work and I still had to drive because there was not bus service and there were no sidewalks on the road (no bike-lanes either).  This was some 25 miles from our nations capitol.  :dunno_white:

If Americans had to pay two or three times more for gas, it would be cheaper for many of us to just stay home and collect unemployment
2 C8H18 + 25 O2 = 16 CO2 + 18 H2O + :)

Im not blaming americans for it , its like , saying that , most places in The UK Have Bus Services, and the distance between isnt going to be so far , the size of england is probly a the size of a few states , but that would make motorbike riding more pleasuring , bigger distances , more house, like , your gardens are huge , and u get alot of land , when its all compact ,im sure its all in relativaty
hmmm

With ALL prices on the rise, im moving 15 miles away from work, i live 1.4 miles now. But Ill save over 200 dollars/ month by doing so and gain a 2 car garage. The US gas pricing is due to the fact that 2 or 3 of our main refineries shut down late last year for maintence and were "convinced" to remain closed, push up the gas price with the shrinking reserves, and allow Bushs' play for Ethanol to look good. But, while Ive been on vacation this week, E-85 ethanol is not that much cheaper.
I say be prepared for 5.00/gallon before next summer. Now doesnt that make the GS look even better?

yep, driving to work one way I drive 58 miles, 116 miles a day, 580 miles a weeks , 2320 Miles @ 18 MPG Jeep @ 3.00$/Gallon Cherokee I used to spend over 400.00$ in gas just to go to work...

Now I ride a GS... 580 Miles @ 57MPG I spend around 60-70$ Month.

Yes we complain because, well the closest "store" that has milk is a short  8 miles away, if you dont live IN -TOWN... its a pain.
(and I understand teh statement I used to live in Montreal QUebec, and everything was 30 Miles max distance, so much so I used my car alot less than I used the subway busses, because it was more convenient, all year long and kept my car for out of town trips.

I am considering if the price of oil are going to continue to go up, I might as well sell my ranch, and buy myself a nice large loft/condo  downtown and put my gas money into somethign else. (ion this case probably rent money.... its all a ying/yang balance now-adays... if you aint paying for mortgage or rent, your paying more for gas/travel time.

I live in the Urban Bit of Southend , just outside called Westcliff , I Live a 15 minute walk from work , Or lol on my Gs 2 minutes , but whats the point ? but i live in a really bad area , so house prices are cheap , but u take into fact the difference between Up North , and Down South

A one bedroom Place in London can cost , 250,000 pounds,  Half A Million Us

U can get a one bedroom in the rural part of up north for about 50,000 pounds

Amazing Really

Crazy World

And The Point , The Nearest Place to get milk was 8 miles away??!!
My Nearest is a 10 second walk , its at the top of my road . i think i need to see the Old US

Another thing to keep in mind is that you actually pay about the same amount for gas as we do. You just also pay an insane amount of taxes on it. Here in the US, out of our $3.50 a gallon around $0.50 of that is state and federal taxes. In the UK you guys pay around $7 a gallon, but a little more than $4 of that is tax, so the base rate of actual gas is the same.

£4.50 a Gal   Bout  $8 dollars a Gal we pay stupid amount of tax

this stuff has been going on longer than when bush was involved;) been goin on many many many years, but sprawl and lack of mass transit are two of the major probs involved here

Yes, we are where we are and we can't change that. I accept the fuel prices are much more politically critical in the U.S. for all the reasons stated earlier, in many ways a society built on cheap (Texan) oil but thinghs will surely have to change, the first law of capitalism is that prices are governed by one simple factor, that of supply and demand, this can be distorted by tax regimes but essentially the international price depends on law one.

Supply is a problem, look at the world today, they have gas rationing in Iran, one of the biggest producers because they lack refinining capability, many of the producing/exporting countries are not politically stable which is not good for supply. On the other hand demand is going sky-high mainlt because the developing world wants to improve it's standards of living, and we can hardly blame them for that. China alone has become a magnet for all raw materials, even the price of scrap metal in Europe is rising rapidly because of demand from the East. Add India and South America to the developing list then consider the potential in Africa and the world's oil starts to look a bit short on the supply side so it aint going to get better not without massive new reserves discovered, more refineries and other sources of fuel coming on-line.

If I wasn't an Atheist I would say "God help us"

By the way the U.S. / UK price per gallon is not quite as alarming as it might look as, wonder of wonders, our Gallons are different. Both eight pints but a UK pint is 20 fl oz and a U.S. pint is 16 fl oz so there is a 20% or 25% difference depending on which way you do the conversion, US = 128 fl oz, UK = 160 fl oz   :dunno_white: Confused, me too!

And I never even got near Climate Change............

That's because climate change is a myth...or humans don't cause it...or something....  :icon_rolleyes:

I, for one, welcome our new $10/gallon gas overlords.
