Actually, I just found out that I need both carbs, unless I want the left one fixed.  The little brass vacuum tube on the left carb appears to be broken off at one end.  I suppose I could play with having it re-brazed, but my time and effort are worth a bit more than that.  Whoever worked on that bike in the past ... grrrrrr.
