OK , I don't know a ton about bikes yet ( I like to say i'm "aggressively learning" , ie : reading up on everything I can hehe) , but i KNOW i want another bike in addition to my GS , something I can use on the highways a bit more (i know my GS works on the highway , I just want something bigger - keeping my GS for the local twisty roads and because i'm just getting it customized to my liking) ... this is in the upper portion of my price range : http://stlouis.craigslist.org/mcy/346047183.html

It sure is purty , but i haven't heard much on these bikes aside from in bike mags and press release stuff ... anyone have any direct knowledge of these , things to look out for , etc ?

thanks for your time ,
-Eric

TL's are great but I wouldn't be gettinig it to spend a lot of time on yet.  They're brutal bikes...I spent a little time on a '05 GSXR1000 and that bike was more forgiving than my TLS was.  You'll have to get used to a few quirks but I can't really tell you what they are...they vary from TL to TL.  On mine the front cylinder would cut out if the plug got wet.

$5500 is a good price if that bike's in as is described condition.

I want one! I love the big twins.

I've heard from a bike mechanic friend of mine that some of the liquid cooled race type suzukis like the TLRs and GSXRs aren't good for much more than 30,000 miles when ridden agressivly. The air cooled suzukis supposedly last forever (GS, Bandit, kattana etc) but as far as liquid cooled racers, the Hondas last the longest.

He told me this and didn't believe him but right at 30,000 miles his TLR started losing compression and he sold it.

Take that for what it's worth but check out the Honda VTR 1000 it's just as sweet.

Here's a cheap one local to you, except that it already has 37,000 miles on it. Doubt you could put more miles on this than the TLR before it craps out on you http://stlouis.craigslist.org/mcy/345532596.html

my first S had 28,000 miles and had perfect compression...and being in the flat lands it spent a good portion of it's like at WOT.  Second had 33k and ran perfect.  Go to www.tlplanet.com and you'll see a lot of 30k plus bikes that have zero issues.  On guy over there has an all-stock 94k TLS.

vsboxerboy

maybe its just me but when I see a bike with a huge list of mods, it kind of turns me off to it.  I like em fresh and clean clean.

compared to the GS that is  gonna make you shaZam! yourself when you twitch the throttle even a little
I love those liter twins, though: TL, VTR anything Duc.  They wind up fast and accelerate even faster :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted:  If it was in my current price range I'd buy it :thumb:

If you just want something for the highway get some detuned 600 or 1000 fours. TLR will gladly kill you if it gets a chance.
'02 GS500 Yellow, Mods: K&N drop in w/o restrictor, BSM full exhaust, 132.5/60/17.5 (e-clip @ 4), progressive springs, katana rear shock ('01), fenderoctomy,  sleek mirrors, loud dual automotive horn, warmed grips(home made), SS front brake line.

spc

Just for comparison a mildly tuned TL will show a busa who's boss any day.......so yeah it'll kill you if you give it a chance :o

makenzie71

maybe you're thinking in manueverability...outside of that a 120rwhp TLR isn't going to touch a 170rwhp busa.

spc

obviously in maneuverability. A GS with a good rider can outmaneuver a busa :flipoff:  I was just speaking of  the bike in general.  even though it produces less horsepower it is about a hundred pounds lighter :thumb:

spc

damn bubba looks like your on top of shaZam! :thumb:

Sounds about right price wise, the mods that have been done look good and sliders would be one of the first things you wanted anyway.

1st things first it's gonna handle like shaZam! the way it is right now, the rear has been lowered. Get the lowering link out of thereand I don't know how the clipon's were raised but if it was done by raising the forks in the tripples that will need to be rectified as well. The last thing you want is a 1000cc's of engine leaned over on a ramp with an unhappy suspension.

How long have you been riding BTW?
Why didn't you just go the whole way and buy me a f@#king Kawasaki you bastards.

TL= widowmakers
ive ridden an TLR
nobody needs that much power
and theyre unstable as all get out.
just my .02
why dont you get a older hornet or something for the freeway
perelli speed demons,15t sprocket, full jardine racing exhaust, rejet. COMING SOON-SM bars, maybe a katana rear wheel

That bike is no more dangerous than any other bike. That includes the GS500

The brain behind the wrist is the determining factor.

Why didn't you just go the whole way and buy me a f@#king Kawasaki you bastards.

I have owned a TLR for 4 years. They are not unstable. Maybe just the one you was on. Mine was my most favorite bike every owned. I would buy another in a heartbeat. No problem dragging a knee whenever I wanted to. They have a lot of usable torque but a competent rider is able to harness it. They are not to be ridden like an I-4.
Common sense in not very common.

Nobody does need that bike then, again I don't need mine nor does my wife need what she has. The grin factor is why I own my bike. The GS is  a fine machine you can pin the throttle and never slow down in the twisties. But a machne like that ohhhhhhh baby it just says spank me I dare ya :thumb: I'll spank back.

I'd knock the bottom out of it ;)

I love that bike.  I'd hit that.  I'd hit it and split it and lick it and quit it and after the ride put my clothes on and go outside. . .and say, "Y'all don't say nothin'. . . "

sequence of events if your not ready for the bike:
sneeze
vrooooooom
f%$k!!!!!!
crash
screech
bang
Oh f%$k call an ambulance, I dont think thats supposed to point that way
boom :o

makenzie71

boom?  it explodes? or the thing that isn't supposed to point which explodes?  the latter would be more interesting.
