The bike started sputtering.. it was idling @ a light and it basically lost power when i hit the gas.. it wouldnt pull.. for a moment i thought low oil, and im yet to check it just inc ase i am low on oil, but the last time i checked out the oil it was fine.

I would have to say it sounded / felt like a fuse related issue, I hope its just that.. I am 12 miles from home (im @ class and posting from there).

What could it be.. it wasnt pulling one bit.. no power.. it was totally sputtering..I had to hit the gas hard and release teh clutch. I thought i was in the wrong gear but I was in 1st.

Anything worth checking out. I will check the oil but i doubt that is the cause, the bike was running quite smooth.

that is most likely not OIL bro.. probably something with either the carbs or petcock.. or fuel in general..

I have heard very very very few electrical probs with the gs.. im doubting your 01 has one..

Check the usual.. fuel flow, dirt in carbs etc..

um, check the fuse. You were there. You saw what mine did. Sputtering and died, repeatedly. First thing though is to check that your lights work when key is on. Fuse goes catastrophically-not a little at a time. The sputtering mine did was because it was using the last of the battery charge.

Either that or a fuel related clog somewhere?

Dude, it might be the pickup coil.  If the problem goes away after you let the bike cool for an hour then it very likely might be that.  If it proves to be that, the only cure until you get a new pickup coil or the whole assembly is to remove that 3-bolt Suzuki logo cover on the right side and ride around like that (assuming there's no rain).

Well its OK to do it to get home but do not ride it for any longer than you have to. Cos if you drop it on the right side and shear off your advancer rotor... you're going to have no way of locating the rotor on the crank...without pulling the crank.
Anyway my guess for Manjul's problem is intake manifold leak. Mine did the same damn thing.

update:

It started and ran fine yesterday night (around 10:00 pm). I know the battery might need a charge (it dimmed a bit when i came to a light - i will charge it this weekend). I dont think its the pickup coil, but i will monitor if it does that again.

Anyway the problem is this..

This morning when i started it, the first thing I heard was a LOUD THUNK! then it started.. I immediately shut it off as soon as it started. Checked oil, it was at the 1/2 way point so i put in 1/4 of a quart in.

The bike ran fine on the way to school. Dont know what caused that thunk?

OK You might have had a fuel supply issue...else it wont clear up that quick and easy. The thunk may have been a misfire in the pipe pointing still to a possible fuel supply issue.

it didnt sound like a backfire.. it sounded like somethign broke..

it was LOUD! and this bike backfires once in a blue moon so i know what that sounds like.

There is a 1000 types of misfire...You may have misfired on the compression stroke (very rare on a cold bike) or 1/2 way down the power stroke also somewhat rare but possible or just as the exhaust valve opens or somehting that sounds like a mecahnical instance but its mix related. Anyone here agree with me or disagree or any other thing is more likely. I am leaning toward a non mechanical incident. Gino's bike seems to have some interesting misfires. That's all I can think of maybe. If it ran fine right after you didn't clobber 2 metallic moving parts together. That's my feeling.

update 10-15-03

I lost power last night... 3 times.. first time it totally shut down and i had to push it off the road ( i was waiting at the light to turn green). It started sputtering the lights were dim...

anyway i waited for a few minutes debating if i should have my friends pick me up and take me home. I tried starting it was no go, then all of a sudden i got power back and it started..

it took a few minutes before i could gain full power (meaning it was sputtering when i hit the gas). However i was able to ride it about 1/2 way home. Then it sputtered again and shut off, i pullled the clutch in and released it and the motion got it started again..

The third time i was taking a left turn into the side street i live on, and it died right there. Luckily i came to a stop before it died. I was debating pushing it home, the electrics were cutting in and our, meaning the headlight will come on and then go off.

I now know its an electrical problem. either something is loose or the fuse is gonna blow. I checked the battery terminals the other day, it was tight and fine.

Sounds like a bad ground connection. Kerry had a long thread some time ago about checking the electrical system. You should find it you do a search. I think it was titled "running on one cylinder" or something like that.

Manjul: what about a "relevant threads" forum, where you admins archive threads that are often referred to, like Kerry's above? So one can easily find them.

Manjul,

You mentioned you had to charge the battery this weekend.

If you battery has a dead cell or won't hold a charge, It may be a voltage issue.

As mentioned, this could be caused by a bad connection to the battery also.

That's actually a great idea. Over at maximum-suzuki.com they have a separate forum called Archive and is "Read Only", no replies possible. Maybe we should consider something like that here?

sorry for teh late reply... i was sick today.

well teh fuse wasnt it.. i checked it, and put teh spare on just in case. I checeked the battery,  its got power,  a few cells are lower on water, so i will fill it up tommorow afternoon (im driving the car so far bcause im sick).

I checked all teh connectors, and they arent at fault, tehy are all snug as ever. the spark plugs are about 4K in mileage (i think), replaced earlier this year but i will replace it again soon.

I didnt charge teh battery as yet, i have been meaning to do so, but i keep forgetting because of my schedule at school. I will do so this weekend but so far the battery is holding charge.
